Every branch that does not bear fruit in me will take it away; and every one that bears fruit, he will cleanse it, that it may bear more fruit ... I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; because apart from me you can do nothing.

Those who live in wine regions know that the vine (the plant) lives for years, but the branches (the branches) must be pruned in winter and need care throughout the year. Its pruning allows to obtain clusters of better quality.

In the Bible, the vine and the branches are an image of the Lord Jesus and of the Christians. Jesus is the source of life, and believers must remain united to him to bear fruit. God, the Father, is the husbandman, who takes care of the believers so that they may bear more fruit.

Every believer is the object of this pruning work. The tests of life are instruments that the Father uses to increase our capacity to bear fruit for his glory. The Lord encourages his disciples to remain close to him, praying and listening to his Word, the Bible. It is the only way to be productive for God.

Why does the Lord say that he is the "true vine"? In the Old Testament it is written: "You brought a vine from Egypt" (Psalm 80: 8). This vine was Israel, the people that God brought out of slavery and chose to produce fruit. That people did not listen to God. It could not be called "the true vine." This title was reserved only for the Lord Jesus. He declared himself to be that vine when he was about to offer himself on the cross. He was going to give his life to be the source of "sap" of life for all who believe in him.
