The Lord Jesus was nailed to the cross, and those who attended this "spectacle" mocked him without discretion. The religious leaders launched a challenge to God: "He trusted in God; free him now if he loves you; for he has said: I am the Son of God "(Matthew 27:43).

The Lord Jesus trusted God. His enemies knew it. He was the Son of God. His works proved it. God declared twice that he found pleasure in him (Matthew 3:17; 17: 5).

"Let her ... if she loves him." Would not God immediately respond to this challenge? Would he allow himself to suppose that he did not want his beloved Son?

But Jesus remained hanging on the cross. No voice was heard from heaven. The jeers continued; God allowed them to act freely ... Then the darkness covered the earth for three hours, and Jesus cried with a loud voice: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Psalm 22: 1, Matthew 27:46 Mark 15:34). Thus Jesus proclaimed in the ears of all that that holy God in whom he trusted had abandoned him. But he was still his God, whom he did not stop loving, even during those terrible hours. Nothing can explain this scene, except for these truths: "God is love" (1 John 4: 8); "You are holy" (Psalm 22: 3).

This was the price the God of love paid to offer salvation to guilty and rebellious men against him. In those dark hours, Jesus bore our sins. The holy God wounded him, abandoned him, but only thus can he forgive all those who believe in him.
