Jesus was going to leave his beloved disciples, but they would not be orphans. The first promise he made to them was that he would send them a divine Person to console them, sustain them and help them: "I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, so that he may be with you forever" (John 14:16). The Holy Spirit would not only be with the believers, but in them, to instruct them: "The Holy Spirit ... will teach you all things, and will remind you of everything I have told you" (v. 26). The Lord calls him "another Comforter," because he himself continues to be the heavenly Comforter, the Lawyer who is with the Father (1 John 2: 1).

Jesus made three more promises to his own: the new life, which flows from his own (John 14:19); a particular closeness in the love of the Son and the Father, for those who show their affection by keeping his commandments (v. 21, 23); and finally peace, his own peace: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you; I do not give it to you as the world gives it. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor be afraid "(v. 27). How real it is that he does not give it "as the world gives"! The world offers little and takes a lot, distracts and stuns the conscience. It acts like a tranquilizer momentarily deceiving the anxieties and torments of the soul. But this is only an illusory peace. The peace that Jesus gives satisfies the heart, and it is eternal.

Finally, the Lord told his disciples that if they had true love for him, they should not try to keep him selfishly on earth, but rather rejoice with his joy (v. 28).
