What you still do not know about the Holy Grail and why it remains a mystery
Although it is generally accepted as a myth and its search has not yet given results, the expectation and pilgrim theories around it increase with time

From the knights of medieval legends to Indiana Jones, to the Nazis, the Holy Grail is the most precious and desired relic of Christianity. Your search is one of the most sacred missions. He has obsessed hunters of relics for millennia and nowadays the whereabouts of the cup in which, according to legend, Jesus drank at the Last Supper with his disciples (and in which Joseph of Arimathea collected the blood of Christ when it was crucified) continues to be one of the most intriguing mysteries.

This fever for religious relics, objects or parts of the body of some saint that is thought to possess miraculous properties, reached its peak in the time of the Crusades, when Christian soldiers returned from the Holy Land with precious booties. As now, objects and theories were falsified to achieve astronomical prices and, in the end, to give prestige to the sacristies and reliquaries of Europe. The story of the crusader just returned from, say, Antioch, was enough to convince the majority.

On the Holy Chalice of Valencia: "It is completely plausible that this vessel was in the hands of the Lord on the eve of his Passion

The visit to these relics promised in many cases the remission of sins or a purification of the soul. All this financial market of valuable objects and human parts was one of the reasons that encouraged Martin Luther to initiate the Protestant reform.

Which is the true one?

For years, the Grail hunters have speculated that the most important relic of Christianity could be one of the chalices found in churches and museums around the world. There are several candidates. In particular, two stand out from the rest. First, the Holy Chalice, preserved in a spectacular reliquary in the cathedral of Valencia. The website of the temple itself states: "Both by the archaeological data and by the testimony of the tradition and the documents that are possessed, it is completely plausible that this beautiful vessel was in the hands of the Lord on the eve of his Passion."

The other pretender is the Sacro Patino, the pride of the cathedral of Genoa. This hexagonal bowl of bright green (traditionally believed to be carved of emerald) was considered for a time the true Grail and today there are those who believe that it is rather a copy of it.

However, there is an important downside with these two candidates. A problem that, as many followers of Indiana Jones will know, is decisive: none seems a cup of which a poor Jew of the year 32 A.D. He would drink with his equally humble companions.

The Bible does not mention the Grail
It is worth remembering that neither the Bible nor any of the apocryphal texts mention the Holy Grail at any time. Although it could have been named before, the first reference that is known dates from about 1,100 years after Christ. It is about the epic fiction 'Perceval or the tale of the Grail', written by Chrétien de Troyes and published in 1176. On that occasion, the Grail was no more than a rock fallen from heaven and it was not until the end of the 12th century that another French poet, Robert de Boron, described it as the cup of the Last Supper.

This is how the concept of a 'grail' was united with the cup described by St. Matthew (26: 27-29): "In the same way, he took the cup and gave it to his disciples saying: 'Take and drink all of it' ... " However, the idea of a cup related to the Eucharist, which appeared in the crucifixion and which grants supernatural properties seems to be the invention of a poet, which would later be adapted to the adventures of King Arthur in the thirteenth century.

This same year, an English antique dealer has offered a reward of one million pounds sterling (1,180,000 euros) to anyone who finds the relic

Although it is generally accepted as a myth and its search has not yet yielded results, the expectation and the pilgrim theories around it increase with time. The legends maintain that it could be in Glastonbury, England, next to a river where blood flows red, or hidden by the Templars during the Crusades or even in Leon, where they claim to have discovered what the Monty Python in 'The Knights of the Table' square 'they could not.

The crusaders of the 21st century

This same year, an English antiquarian has offered a reward of one million pounds sterling (1,180,000 euros) to anyone who finds the relic. As the 'Diario de León' points out, the city councilor for Culture - who is also a historian - is convinced that the Grail has been in the Basilica of San Isidoro for more than a thousand years, and is willing to invite the aforementioned antiquarian to see the Chalice of Doña Urraca.

"We will have to see now if the British patron accepts the challenge. It would be, undoubtedly, the accolade that the 'Leonese Grail' needs, to the detriment of the chalice of Valencia, which has recently created a pilgrimage route to capture religious tourism, "the newspaper said.

It is not the cup of a humble carpenter
The theories are not limited to certifying the authenticity of the relic, as is the case of León or Valencia. It is not the case of the English historian and writer Grigor Fedan, who has ensured that since the beginning of Christianity the concept of the Holy Grail has been misinterpreted and that, as if it were Tom Hanks in 'The Da Vinci Code', he has only solved the enigma.

The English historian Grigor Fedan assures that his theory on the identity of the Holy Grail will change forever to Christianity

His theory is this: instead of being a humble cup of a carpenter, the Grail is actually the only gospel written by the son of God. "The cup is just a symbol for the real teachings of Jesus," assures The Express. It was so named, he says, with the aim of avoiding persecution suffered by Christians at that time.

Not only is he allowed to say that his discovery will forever change Christianity, but he is clear about the course that the supposed text made until disappearing into oblivion. Fedan believes that at first he hid in the Library of Alexandria, in Egypt, the largest store of knowledge of antiquity. Anticipating the attack of the Pope's forces in the fourth century AD, he was transferred to a secret location in the Tibesti mountains, the largest in the Sahara, in Chad. Fedan believes that the Templars made copies of the Gospel and that they were hidden before the order was dissolved in the 14th century.

The Rosslyn Chapel appears in many theories about the Templars and the Holy Grail.

"Probably there is a copy buried under Rosslyn, in Scotland, and the freemasons could have another copy," he says. It is a small chapel surrounded by forest, just 15 kilometers from Edinburgh, which, coincidentally or not, appeared in 'The Da Vinci Code'. "The original, written by Jesus, would have been treasured in some sacred place, for its mystical value rather than practical," he adds. As with the Ark of the Covenant or the Spear of Destiny, all are hypotheses that, as in Antiquity, stimulate the imagination, the legends and, of course, the movement of money.
