Must man make gods for himself? But they are not gods. " Jeremiah 16:20

Idolatry was one of the great sins of ancient Israel, and spiritual Israel is affected by a tendency to the same madness. Remfán's star no longer lights up and women no longer mourn for Tammuz, but Mammon still introduces his golden calf, and the altars of pride are not abandoned.
The self, in its various manifestations, strives to subdue its elect under its rule, and the flesh lifts its altars where it can find space for them. Preferred children are often the cause of much sin in believers. The Lord is grieved when he sees that we spoil them excessively. They will live to be the cause of a great curse, just as Absalom was to David; or else they will be taken from us, thus leaving our homes desolate. If Christians want to spend nights of strenuous sleeplessness, that they spoil their children.

Well says the passage that the gods made by man "are not gods", because those objects of our ridiculous love are very doubtful blessings, the solace they can give us now is dangerous, and the help they can communicate us at the time of the affliction is null. Why, then, do we allow ourselves to be entranced by vanities? We sympathize with the gentile who worships a stone god, but nevertheless we worship a golden god. Where is the superiority between a god of flesh and a wooden god? The motive, the sin, the folly are the same ingredients in both cases, only that in our case the crime is more serious, because we have more light and sin in front of it.

The pagans bow to a false deity, but they never knew the true God. We commit two evils, since we forget the living God and turn to idols. May God save us from this grave iniquity!
