What does Emmanuel mean?
God With You
Emmanuel appears specifically in the book of Isaiah 7:14, "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." In the Gospel of Matthew we also read, 1:22 - 23 says: All this happened to fulfill what the Lord said through the prophet: "A virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and you will name him" Immanuel " which means: "God with us". The word Emmanuel is a Hebrew word that, as the Gospel of Matthew indicates, means:
"God with us or with us is God."
The word Emmanuel is a Hebrew word that is indicated by the Gospel of Matthew. The name Emmanuel is a proper name of messianic symbolism, applied to Jesus in his birth. According to Isaiah 7, Ahaz, king of Judah (735 AD), was in serious trouble because of the threat of war with Rezin, king of Syria, and Remaliah, king of Israel, who had allied to take Jerusalem. Ahaz was extremely fearful, so God sent Isaiah to comfort him. The prophet told the king to ask for a sign, but he did not. It was then that the prophet announced to him that God himself would give him a sign: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." God promised to free Ahaz within a short time, the one that would need that child to reach the age of discernment between the bad and the good. The king, however, had to trust in the word of the Lord.
The sign consisted, then, in that that child would be born of a virgin and its birth would mean the presence of God to give freedom.
No other but our Lord Jesus Christ would have been Emmanuel.
(Psalms 72:5-8 NIV) He will endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. {6} He will be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. {7} In his days the righteous will flourish; prosperity will abound till the moon is no more. {8} He will rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.
