Honoring Father And Mother

Exodus 20:12
12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

Do you remember that time you did not remember? It is not just a play on words. I wish you to cast your eyes on that first stage of your existence in which you could not take charge of yourself; that time in which you generated what you now call your past, but which had not happened but happened. That was your first time, or better: your time entry. When you could not even perceive time, time itself was as it were to build in your mind, which lacked even those references that today seem more obvious to you.
You do not like to remember the time you did not remember, maybe because you can not say anything about it, but what others have told you. Well, I tell you that this is a great treasure, and it makes you well to look at that radical indigence. The root of your life does not belong to you; It is in the hands, the words and the versions of others: your parents, your brothers, your teachers. I like to see you in the radical confusion that you show when others can talk about you and yourself, you can not say if what they say is true or is false. Then you see yourself as forced to trust, and that's what I think is good and healthy for you.

Indeed, that proud sufficiency that marks your time has its beginning in a lie: each person acts as if he had made himself; as if I owed nothing to anyone; as if nothing had to be grateful, nothing to ask for, no one to trust, nothing to wait for. Hearing how you went and existed beyond what you can even remember is the best reminder of how much you owe to that portion of life that others have given for you.

Here is the profound meaning of that commandment of the Law of God: "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be prolonged on the land that Yahweh, your God, is going to give you" (Ex 20, 12; 5.16). What is this "honor"? In that mixture of humility and gratitude that goes beyond you when you return to the first sources of your existence and discover that you radically depended on many, and especially on your father and your mother.

As you see, it is a feeling very close to what is possible and healthy to feel with God himself. Without this ability to recognize what those neighbors-your father and your mother-have done for you, there is little that the soul can feel before God. And also, without this gratitude before the neighbor, it will not be that each neighbor appears like a threat, like a duty, like a competition? If it were the case that the first time the "neighbor" appears in the Law of God is to ask you to serve him or to demand that you love him, the human heart would be right to feel forced in his charity towards his neighbor. But it is not like that: this commandment that I am telling you invites you to discover that your first relationship with other human beings was marked by the pure gift of being, to the extent that your own memory can not keep an exact account of what you have received. Your parents are the first image of love that is given, and therefore, as neighbors, are the humanly necessary invitation to understand the depth and logic of love that God asks you because he gave it to you!

This is not, therefore, a commandment "of courtesy", "in good manners" or simply a way of calling you to a duty of justice with your weaknesses or with the arrival of your old age. This blessed commandment is the door of all love of neighbor! This wonderful mandate helps you to unite the love of God and the love of neighbor where you must always unite: in the core of your being, where your eyes can no longer see and where your memory falters.
