Saint Brigid, also known as Brigid of Kildare or Brigid of Ireland, is one of Ireland's patron saints, she is known as having been an Irish Christian nun, and for founding many monasteries for nuns. The most famous of these monasteries was located in County Kildare, Ireland, which is why she is known to some as Saint Brigid of Kildare.

Saint Brigid is believed to have walked on Irish soil around the time Saint Patrick was also spreading the word of Christ, it is also believed that Saint Brigid's mother was baptised by Saint Patrick, and as a young girl Brigid witnessed Saint Patrick preach. In the hagiography of Irish saints, the  'Trias Thaumaturga', it is said that:

"Between St Patrick and St Brigid, the pillars of the Irish people, there was so great a friendship of charity that they had but one heart and one mind. Through him and through her Christ performed many great works."

Saint Brigid was born in Faughart, Dundalk, County Louth (Dundalk happens to be my town of birth as well 🙂 ) around 450/451 AD, and died at the age of 75 around 525 AD. Saint Brigid performed many miracles, and there are many legends associated with her, from feeding and healing the poor, to founding a school of art that included metalwork and illumination.

Saint Brigid's feast day is February, 1st (Saint Brigid's day in Ireland). Saint Brigid's crosses are made on her feast day, typically woven from rushes (above picture).

There are two stories I remember most of Saint Brigid from my childhood. The first is the legend of Brigid's cloak, it describes how Brigid acquired the land to build her monastery in Kildare.

When Brigid approached the King of Leinster for land to build her monastery he refused, but Brigid was not put off by his refusal. Brigid and her sisters prayed that the King’s heart would soften, and returned to the King asking "Give me as much land as my cloak will cover".

Seeing that Brigid's cloak was small, he laughed and granted the request... but when Brigid asked her four helpers to take a corner of the cloak and walk in opposite directions, north, south, east, and west, the cloak began to grow and spread across many acres. The King was amazed by what he was witnessing and recognised Brigid as being blessed by God, he later became a patron of Brigid's monastery and converted to Christianity.

The second story is that of Saint Brigid's beauty. It is said that Saint Brigid was very beautiful, and when she was a young woman her father wanted her to marry, but Brigid refused and wanted to spend her life working for God. Brigid prayed for her beauty to be taken so no one would want to marry her, and the prayer was granted. Legend has it that It was not until after she made her final vows that Brigid's beauty was restored.

This is very interesting, I never heard of her before. She seemed like quite a gal!

Very cool. I always wonder about the more fantastic accounts of miracles in the early years of the church, but I reserve judgment for fear of limiting my respect for God's power.

All the same, her reputation as a founder of schools of industry I think most catches my interest. It makes great sense that faith and industry should complement each other without corrupting each other, and it seems she thought the same.

But a patron saint of both Florida and Ireland? As a Floridian with Irish heritage drawn to metalwork, I should probably have paid more attention to her legacy before now!

She has a very interesting story~!
