WHAT IS PARENTHOOD?

This is simply a state of being a parent. Our parents are our father and mother, who are married to each other because they love eachother and they gave birth to us the children. They are expected to demonstrate some responsible characteristics and this characteristics when displayed made them responsible parents.

CHARACTERISTICS OF RESPONSIBLE PARENT

1. Parents must ensure they are ready for a newborn baby by getting ready every necessary thing.
2. Attending the ante-natal regularly by the woman.
3. They must provide care for the child.
4. They must eat nourishing foods.
5. They must give exclusive breast feeding to their children
6. They must ensure that immunisation is given to the babies.
7. They should provide clothing, shelter, and education for their children, etc.

WHAT IS STD'S AND HIV/ AIDS?

STD means sexually transmitted disease. HIV means Human Immune Deficiency Syndrome. This is the virus that destroys part of the white blood cells called the body soilders. This white blood cells fight or prevent disease in the body. When the virus attacks the white blood cells, the body becomes weak and open to all diseases.
AIDS means Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is the final life threatening state of HIV infection. This is when one is highly susceptible to infections which the naturally immune system would normally combat.

TYPES OF STD'S

The types of sexually transmitted diseases are

• Gonorrhea
• syphilis
• Herpes

SOURCES OF HIV INFECTION

HIV can be contacted through the following ways:

• sexual intercourse
• exchange of body piercng objects such as pins, needles, syringes, toothbrushes
• blood transfusion
• mother to child transmission during child birth and through breast feeding

EFFECTS OF STD'S, HIV/ AIDS ON THE FAMILY

The bad effects of STD AND HIV/AIDS on the family includes:

• marriage failure
• reduction in family income
• Break in the family
• Stigma and neglect in the society
• Premature death

RESPONSIBLE SEXUAL BEHAVIOURS

Sexual behaviours that can prevent people from sexually transmitted diseases are:

• Being faithful to one's sexual partner
• Avoiding premarital sex
• Avoiding pornographic pictures that can arouse the body.
• Using protective devices such as condoms during sex.
