SteemChurch: Our Inheritance in Him... We know who we are!

Introduction

In the world we live, we've heard of stories upon stories, both in real-life, as well as in movies, of how brothers, siblings and family members, at times wage war against another, just to get a certain portion of or an entire property or money for an *inheritance*…

Humanly speaking, almost everybody believe that they ought to be entitled to some sort of inheritance; even a 5 year old boy doesn't seem to know any lesser. That's the nature of man for you. The prodigal son displayed this disposition. I know we are very familiar to the story. But let's refresh it on our minds, while we look into it in Scripture:

Luke 15:11-13

  1. And he said, “There was a man who had two sons.
  2. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them.
  3. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.

The prodigal, even though he practically hasn't done anything substantially great to his father, but by the reason of his birth he believed that he's eligible to a percentage of his father's property as his inheritance— even though his father was still very much alive

That's the nature of man; we inherited from Adam by the reason of his fall... We often think that we’re entitled… to get, even when we technically has not giving up anything. This somewhat explains why many of us think we’re entitled to an apology (even when are wrong); or to be given attention (even if we ought to be the one to give someone else some level of attention) … the list goes on!

Now, what exactly do we mean by term INHERITANCE… and what are the things that need to be in place for passing of an inheritance on a legal ground?

According to the Oxford learner's dictionary, an Inheritance is the money, property, etc. that you receive from somebody when they die; the fact of receiving something when somebody dies.

In consequence, anybody cannot just claim an Inheritance without a legal backing. There need to be a ‘bequeather’ and a 'beneficiary', whose relationship is validated with a legal document, in most cases called a "Will".

Well, you will agree with me that in most countries, tribes, and culture the basic prerequisite for receiving a man’s estate, property or possession is to be his SON.

For instance, in my country, the traditional way of governance at the grassroots’ level, specifically in rural areas, where a monarch— a king is present; it’s is only normal for the son of the king to reign over the kingdom in question when his father dies. So, at a very tender age, they start teaching the first son of the king (that’s when the king has more than one sons) to live, think and act like a King.

Although, there are some instances where a female can claim the Inheritance of a man. That's when such a man didn't give birth to a male child.

"...If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter." (Numbers 7:8)

Our Inheritance in God

Having set a foundation for the topic to thrive well in our minds, let’s now consider our inheritance in God.

Is it not interesting that in the Kingdom we belong to, there are no male, females, tribes, colour, etc., as far as our Inheritance in God is concerned?

Yes, it definitely is!

The only qualification one needs to be entitled to God's possessions, promises, spiritual and heavenly blessings, is to know and be in right outstanding with Christ, the firstborn of the church—the begotten son of God. And this comes through faith-- confessing and believing in Him as your lord and saviour.

Indeed, he has qualified you (and me) to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light" (Col. 1:12)

God gave an excellent inheritance to us through Christ— and through to Abraham by promise. (Gal.3:18)

In other words, we were redeemed from the curse of the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. And because we are now sons, and having received the Holy Spirit into our hearts, we can cry, Abba, Father. (Gal. 4:5-7)

We are heirs of God through Christ. In fact, together with Christ, we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Therefore, our Inheritance in God can be summed up as the glorious life and excellent promises he has for our lives.

Genesis 12:2-3

  1. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
  2. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

In conclusion, since we did work our way to the inheritance of God... but God did through grace and His son did; we must constantly desire his will and promises for our lives, as we live on a daily basis here on earth.
