DailyCelestialChallenge Monday-Darkness: The dark sky park Galloway

in #steemchurch6 years ago

A remote Scottish forest, unlike what happens in the rest of the region, where light pollution prevents the observation of the Milky Way, has been declared the first Dark Sky Park in the United Kingdom. Galloway stands as well as the fourth dark park of the world, the darkest of them all, according to the measurement system created by the Dark Sky Association. It obtained the category after the work of many lighting experts, who certified the minimum light pollution of the place.

The Galloway Forest Park is a huge wonder of nature; 777 km of valleys covered with forests, lakes and the highest hills of the south of Scotland. Here there are few buildings and even less light pollution. For this reason, the International Dark Sky Association selected it to be the first national park in the UK to be awarded the Dark Sky Park qualification. Across Europe there are only two more parks of the same type.

It is not necessary to be an enthusiast of astronomy to be admired before the stars, planets, meteors and other celestial bodies clearly visible. Even with the naked eye you can enjoy views of the sky that you could never see in the city. If you bring a pair of binoculars you can marvel at the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn, while our companion the Moon becomes a strange world of craters, seas of dust and cliffs

On a scale that goes up to 24, when the darkness is absolute, Galloway's light measurement reached 23. As a comparison, it is useful to know that the urban skies reach between 15 and 16, on the same scale.

Have a wonderful day.
