Quite an entertaining thread on the front page of Reddit today. You can check out the original CNN article here and the reddit comments here.

A quick summary:

  • 30-year-old man named Michael still lives with his parents.

  • They ask him to move out, give him five written notices

  • He shows no signs of doing so

  • They take him to court

  • He argues that they need to give him six months notice before they can eject him from the property.

  • The judge rules for the parents, throwing our hero onto the streets

Here are a few quotes:
From Michael:

He claimed that for the past eight years he "has never been expected to contribute to household expenses, or assisted with chores and the maintenance of the premises, and claims that this is simply a component of his living agreement"

From the parents:

"So far we have seen no indication that you are preparing to leave." It adds, "Be aware that we will take any appropriate actions necessary to make sure you leave the house as demanded.”

Rules of the Competition

I feel like debate between users on Steemit is a little lacking compared websites like YouTube or Reddit. For this competition, I want to encourage people to debate with each other, not just with the original poster. Therefore in deciding the winners, the main criteria will be who debates or responds the most frequently and effectively to other users.

There are two sides:

The accused

His Strongest defender: One share in Steem Basic Income and one SBD
Second place: one SBD
(you may have to get a little creative in defending him, check the reddit thread for inspiration).

His Aggrieved parents.

If you are already a member of Steem Basic Income, I will send you one STEEM instead.

So basically you can pretend you are a lawyer in the courtroom, either argue for Michael’s position (his parents must give him six further months to move out) or the parents position (he needs to move out now).

I will announce the winners this Saturday. Happy debating!

Results

This time I didn't get re-steemed by Steem Basic Income, so this contest got lost in the depths of Steemit and no one really saw it. Lesson learned for me, next time I'll have to spend some $$ to promote it. I would like to try this kind of debate competition on Steemit again, so watch out the next one, it should be a bit more visible. Prizes this time to @conradt and @rentmoney.

Alright let me defend the man-child.

The facts :

  • The man is 30 and does not contribute to the household.

All this is the parents fault. They should instilled in him sooner the value of hard work. They allowed him to become what he is. They supported him in his early 20's .. mid 20's and late 20's. Now all of a sudden they want him out. That is totally unfair and uncalled for. He has no knowledge of the outside world and is at a huge disadvantage.

I would even argue that 6 months is still not enough time for this 30 year old man to be ready to move out. He would need at least 12 months advance notice with an option to extend his stay for an extra 6 months if needed. This would give him plenty of time to find an apartment and suitable job that can sustain him in life.

Indeed. Michael is like a bird that has spent its life in a cage. He must be given time to learn how to fly!

Exactly .... no need in rushing him.

Hello, this is quite interesting and i would love to take part...that is if the contest isn't closed already. Its Sunday here.

Sadly I think we missed this one, but it did look really fun. I could have had real fun with this and would definitely had sided with Michael!

Yeah, we missed it. I had a few funny ideas in my head. Hmmm...i was thinking of supporting Micheal too.

Sadly this contest got lost in the depths of Steemit, will be back next time with some more promotion!

That is sad. Alright then...i look forward to a next time.

Well, perhaps anyone who is interested in this case should check out the movie: Tangy.

French movie right? Did they take him to court or just let him live there for the rest of his life?

yup. A french movie. Well, in the movie the parents tried all sort of ways to get rid of their only son, and of course that includes suing him. The son, through all the ordeal, is pretty nonchalant about his parents' efforts to throw him out. It's a hilarious movie. Eventually Tangy immigrate to China with his wife where several generations live under the same roof is a common cultural practice.

Well my brother made it to the age of about 28 before he moved out. if it wasn't for some strong societal pressure I'm sure he'd still be there

well not only that. it's not that cool to bring girls home and you have to explain to them why you are still living with your parents. Definitely a deal breaker here. Haha.

I think that's the main reason he moved out in the end!

I side with the parents on this one sorry Michael! Its a big bad world out there mate - tough love is the best thing for you. Youve been free riding for 8 years, time to get out and contribute to society.

I think 5 written notices is enough and your parents have done you enough favors!

Well he is very much out there now, doing interviews on CNN

Yeah I saw this on Stuff and thought he was from New Zealand - made me feel better when I realised he wasnt..

He would rival the ‘naturally I finished my set guy.’ Remember him?
