Requirements for snail farming
Challenges faced during snail farming
What is heliculture?
So heliculture is simply snail farming or rearing of snails. It is a form of agriculture which deals mainly and only with keeping of snails and it's different breeds.
It could be for subsistence purpose where the farmer keep snails for eating or commercial purpose where they are reared for their shells to be sold later.
Ofcourse, farmers involved in this are known as heliculturist 🌝
Different breeds species reared includes:
Giant African snail
Roman snail
Garden snail
Requirements for snail rearing
Requirements for snail includes:
- Water: they are aquatic; they require a bit of moisture to survive and keep them going. Not one to flood them though.
- Feeds: feeding snails could be quite easy if the farmers are able to get clean vegetables and vegetables as they are herbivorous animals. Leafy greens too are one of the options.
- Housing: while rearing snails; it is important to put into consideration their safety. Snails are kept in an enclosed area where they could be safe from predators like snakes.
- Overall environment: snails would grow well and reproduce in an environment that is favourable to them and this implies the area should be quite humid, well ventilated and shaded.
Challenges faced during snail rearing
It is almost impossible to go through a process without no or little challenge; in snail rearing, the farmers are of course bound to face some disadvantages which might include:
- Predators: with good housing structure or not, some farmers might still encounter the problem of dealing with attacks of predator on their snails; this includes lizards feeding on the eggs, preying upon by snakes and other reptiles.
- Environmental regulations: it is impossible to control the weather conditions to make it favourable at all times for the sake of their snails. These creatures require a cool and humid environment which is not always on. The farmers are stuck with accepting their fate especially during hot seasons.
- Capital: according to research, starting up snail farming can require a lot of investment at the beginning. Farmers can be challenged at the beginning with setting up the infrastructures and getting other equipments and tools.
Here we go.
