Snail farming is known as Heliculture, which is the process of raising and breeding snails for commercial purposes, mainly for food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical uses. Heliculture involves the management of snails in a controlled environment to ensure their growth, marketability, and reproduction yield.

In African countries, snail farming is well known, and Nigeria is one of the countries that leads in snail farming, which is a good part of it, as it is less expensive to start, and snails are very nutritious.

What are the requirements for snail Farming

The requirements for snail farming are:

• Suitable land and soil: You must have a land that is well drained and not waterlogged, and the soil should be loamy, rich in organic matter, and slightly moist.

• Snail breed selection: There should be Achatina fulica, Achatina marginata.

• Feeding: Snails feed on vegetables, leaves, fruits, and household waste like watermelon, pawpaw leaves, cabbage, and cocoyam leaves.

• Record Keeping

Challenges encountered in snail Farming

The challenges encountered in snail farming are:

• Predators: snakes, rats, frogs, ants, and even birds often attack snails of pens that are not protected well.

• Climate Conditions: It is hard for snails to survive in a very hot or dry environment.

• Slow Growth Rate: Snails grow slowly and may take up to a year to reach market size, which affects cash flow.

• Poor record keeping, thieves, and lack of technical knowledge.
