Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #53
What is Agricultural Ecology
To the best of my understanding, Agricultural Ecology is the study of the relationships between humans, animals, crops, and the environment within the agricultural environment.
Agricultural ecology focuses on how ecological principles like nutrient cycling, energy flow, biodiversity, and population regulation can be applied to make farming more enjoyable, sustainable, affordable, and friendly. Also, it can be defined as the science of managing farms in harmony with nature.
Discuss the two main Components of Agricultural Ecology
- Biotic Component
- Abiotic Component
Biotic Component
This is a living component that includes all living organisms that directly or indirectly influence agricultural productivity. Example: plants, animals, and microorganisms.
The function of the Biotic Component is that plants can convert sunlight into food through photosynthesis, and soil microorganisms help decompose organic matter and fix nitrogen.
Abiotic Component
This is a non-living components that affect agricultural productivity. A good example is soil that provides nutrients and physical support for plants. Water, which is essential for plant growth and soil fertility, and also air that supplies carbon dioxide and oxygen for respiration and photosynthesis.
The function of Abiotic factors is that it's determine what types of crops and animals can thrive in a given area. Also, they regulate plant physiology and soil chemistry.
