Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #34
Dairy farming is the type of agriculture where farmers raise domestic animals like cows, sheep and goats for milk production. Dairy farming is mainly used for commercial purposes, where dairy farmers make money from it. Dairy farmers ensure that cows or cattle are well-fed and taken care of so they can produce quality milk as much as possible.
Dairy farmers make a lot of money by selling milk at wholesale prices or selling directly to final consumers at reasonable prices. Dairy farmers mainly use cows because they are the major suppliers of milk worldwide compared to other mammals. Dairy farmers ensure that the milk obtained from the cows meets the quality standards and is safe for human consumption.
All mammals can produce milk, but cows are chosen due to the advantages they have over other mammals. Most developed countries use dairy cows to produce milk for general consumption.
• Goats serve as an alternative to cow milk, and they are highly used to produce yogurt, cheese, and other products made from goat dairy.
• Camel milk, produced from camels, can be found in some parts of the world like Africa for dairy products and drugs to treat different kinds of sicknesses like jaundice and pneumonia.
• Sheep are a type of dairy farming which serve as an alternative to cow milk, particularly for cheese production in some regions.
• Water buffalo, this type of dairy farming is common in Pakistan, India, and other countries. These parts of the world use buffalo milk to produce yogurt and the milk they consume on a daily basis.
Challenges in Dairy Farming are discussed below.
Challenges faced by dairy farmers vary; some may face financial constraints to operate the dairy farm, and this mostly happens in rural areas.
Shortage of labour is another significant challenge because the owner cannot do all the work alone, so they need workers to help run the activities of the dairy farm. If the salary is not attractive or the environment is not conducive, no workers would work in that place.
Inadequate government support also sets back most dairy farms. Those who establish this productive dairy farming business do not usually receive government support that would help them financially. In fact, it is the biggest challenge that hinders the process of forming a dairy farm.
