Facebook Handing Over More Info To US Government: "This Is What Facebook Was Designed To Do"

Every year, Facebook gets tens of thousands of requests for data from governments worldwide, including search warrants, subpoenas, or calls to restrict certain kinds of content. And, according to a new report, those requests are increasing at an alarming rate.

According to QZ.com, in the United States, the requests rose by 26% from the last six months of 2016 to the first six months of 2017, while globally, requests increased by about 21%. Since 2013, when the company first started providing data on government requests, the US number has been steadily rising - it has roughly tripled in a period of four years.

This is alarming many and causing a concern about privacy. Joe Joseph, from the Daily Sheeple, isn't sugarcoating the reality of Facebook either. _ "Duh. This is exactly what Facebook was designed to do,"_ says Joseph.

"You have to remember that Zuckerberg had "seed money" and that seed money came from CIA front companies that put a lot of resources into this and…basically think about it as like, sowing seeds; if you will. They knew that Facebook was gonna bear fruit.

I don't think they realized just how big it would become. But I can tell you that they get so much information and intel from social media: I don't think that it would go away even if we wanted it to."

The government keeps requesting the information, and Facebook continues to comply with the government's demands.

In the first six months of 2013, it granted the government - which includes the police - 79% of requests ("some data was produced" in these cases, the company says); in the first six months of 2017, that share rose to 85%. "We continue to carefully scrutinize each request we receive for account data — whether from an authority in the U.S., Europe, or elsewhere — to make sure it is legally sufficient," Chris Sonderby, the company's general counsel, wrote in a post. "If a request appears to be deficient or overly broad, we push back, and will fight in court, if necessary."

But Joseph thinks Facebook is just trying to pacify the easily manipulated sheeple of society.

"This is pretty troubling when you think about what you put out there, what they collect, and Facebook only being one of the many avenues that they have," Joseph says.

"The United States is collecting your data. Whether you like it or not. They are scooping up everything. And they're taking it and they're storing it in their facility at Bluffdale, Utah which has the capacity at this time to store every communication on the face of this earth for the next one hundred years."

"It's unbelievable," Joseph continues. "This is stuff that is unacceptable to me, but I'm sure, to a lot of you. And these companies have really gone too far…they can reconstruct your life and make anyone they want a patsy."

All social media platforms are the source of information, not only for governments but for recruiters or any other third party interested in someones bio data.
But there is one thing: If I don't want to give others my personal details, I will not. By posting on FB or other social sites, everyone should acknowledge the risks. And everyone should acknowledge that no one is forcing you to make your personal info public.

While I have a pseudonymous fakebook account, due to it's age (I couldn't make one now, I think), I don't use it anymore.

The vast network of data really gets around pseudonymity anyway, because they can link various databases, and completely profile you even if you don't post on social media.

They can get your personal details through means other than you posting. Other's posts, texts, etc... While you can reduce the details you provide, most salient details, including views on matters they deem important, are still able to be collected about you from other sources.

It is interesting..I just wrote a post about how I the steem blockchain is guaranteed to disrupt social media in general. Blockchain is going to obliterate these companies. The centralized power in their hands are too much for them to handle.

I am excited to see what the next 6 months holds for these companies. Steem is growing at an accelerating rate. At some point, I am not sure of the number, the tipping point will be hit. We will see their subscriber rates falls drastically.

A few million coming to steem from FB will be a good start. That is enough people spreading the word which will set the dominoes falling.

I believe we are seeing the beginning of the end for this tyranny.

I do work towards that goal, but I do not hope.

Hope is the enemy.

Fakebook just bought a huge chunk of LTC, and I fear this is going to be used to leapfrog Steemit. Steem is a better currency, but it's way better than BTC also. Quality, as we see from the trending page, isn't necessarily the most important factor in business success.

Often, it is how amenable something is to corruption, exactly what we learn from trending. Eric Schmidt pulling back from Alphabet may indicate there are anti-corruption efforts ongoing, and that can dramatically pare back the dominance of the big three social media. I say 'can', and not will.

It's an uphill battle for folks seeking a society that no longer rewards the powerful with more power, and I cannot profess certainty it's happening now. All too often reformers don't reform anything, and merely assume the profitable position of the corruption they topple.

This is the likeliest future.

All too often reformers don't reform anything, and merely assume the profitable position of the corruption they topple.

This is absolutely correct. Do we see a repeat of what is occurring now in the power breakdown? Changing seats on the Titanic does nothing. We see the some of the whales on here acting in the same manner, trying to dominate and control. Bitcoin was accused of the same thing. Perhaps humans simply arent cut out to have power.

I found the FB/LTC interesting. I do not see how it will work as a reward system like STEEM since we see a challenge with the transaction costs. That is part of the genius of the steem blockchain.

There is no question that STEEM outpaces BTC and LTC. Steemit is an app that doesnt have all the answers...in fact it appears more of a challenge to Reddit at the moment than FB. Centralized blockchains could have issues in the future if that is the direction that FB takes. Right now, it appears LTC is just a payment method on FB although I might be mistaken about that.

"Perhaps humans simply arent cut out to have power."

People are biologically designed to form power cliques, tribes, and communities. They are also designed to reject any criticism of their chosen people and to fight to the death to defend, and advance the interests, of their people.

Many people are incapable of being free, by virtue of their biology.

Those of us that are, and are also disinclined to rule those slaves by nature, are vastly outnumbered, and overpowered by the combination of psychopathic masters, and masochistic slaves.

I hope you are right about fees on LTC. However, the witnesses on the Steem blockchain are elected by stake weighted votes, just like all other votes on Steemit. This means that it would only take approximately ~15% of SP on the platform to execute a hostile takeover of all witnesses, and it only takes the top 20 to impose code, completely controlling the Steem blockchain.

ZuckerBorg could spend lunch money to do this, and then he'd have Steem.

Very valid point....or a few of the whales could get together and pull it off on their own. What you posted earlier, there are more than a few on here who have shown the inclination to "rule" if given the chance. One drawback to cryptocurrencies is they all seem to have a few controlling most of the tokens.

This is just a repeat of the fiat world...that is what the banksters do. Sure crypto, for the most part, cant be expanded like fiat, but it does have a major drawback in the distribution. If this does not correct over time, we might simply see a replacement of enslavers....with a new breed of enslavers.

The extant distribution of Steem is far more oligarchical than fiat. Steemit's GINI is worse than any nation on Earth, and getting worse at an accelerating rate.

This does not bode well.

"...or a few of the whales could get together and pull it off on their own."

About 30% of SP now controls the witnesses, and this is owned by whales. They currently control the witnesses, and the code.

When ZuckerBorg comes for us, those mined stakes will transform into golden parachutes, on which whales drift off into elysiastic sunsets of sybaritic wealth and privilege which Kublai Khan himself did not enjoy in Xanadu.

And they'll still be pissants compared to ZuckerBorg.

I see one of those would-be sybarites has shown the truth of my comment disturbs his rest =p

Thanks for making my case for me @berniesanders!

Facebook has been doing this for years and years and facebook users dont seem to mind. If you don't want your info sold/requested - you should not use facebook. It is wide and far known that facebook are selling personal data , all kinds of it too.

Yeah! Facebook is giving a lot of data to CIA and Pentagon everyday. Even whatsapp, instagram, their is no privacy. They are taking our social life fr profit. I do not think that Zuckerberg is genius but he is just opportunist. Thats the main reason many people who using it stop using facebook and shift towards snapchat and and so like others app.

Facebook steal our privacy ... boycott facebook and join steemit.. nothing is better than steemit in terms of social media...

Leaved Facebook for the good. Less blood pressure, less anxiety; and time-saving at its best.

I kind of envy you. Unfortunately I have built connections and groups through facebook, which cannot be easiliy replaced, once I find an alternative, I will do the same. I like facebook, but really cant determine what is the effect on my mentality - good or bad. I am sure that I would have more time for better activites.

It's also a disinformation center and I think it's an "ego feeding" machine :) Anyway, wish you the very best on your journey :)

From what I have seen on here, this place is an ego-feeding machine in some ways too.

I don't know about ego, but it really has some issues with greed. As long as money is involved, you can't expect anything else. I would really be interested to hear what Dan has to say for all this "power game" going on.

I think @dan said what he meant when he left the team.

Lol, yeah ! We even did not touch the disinformation string. It is awful - they said that they will battle it, but man it is getting out of hand. These "fake news" are everywhere and people fall for them - SAD ! In the times of digital everything....

Absolutely. It's everywhere :)

Great move...that is what we like to see.....

Glad you are here...

Everyone has to listen to the CIA, if they do not meet their requirements can close Facebook. No one is stronger than the state, of course behind the state are powerful people like in every story. Have a nice day @zerOhedge

And this you call news. For many years, government intelligence agencies have been actively using social networks and not just Facebook to get information. The only less protected social platform is Telegram.
Good luck to you and good.

И это Вы называете новостью. Уже много лет правительственные спецслужбы активно используют социальные сети и не только Фейсбук для получения информации. Единственной более менее защищенной социальной платформой является Телеграм.
Удачи Вам и добра.

this is a huge problem regarding privacy rights. All the more we should push for decentralization. Seriously, why use Facebook when you are not being compensated for the data Facebook is collecting? Seriously, screw Facebook. Welcome Steemit!

Say the "wrong" thing on facebook, end up in the wal-mart internment camp.

LOL

Prolly actually true.
