WitnessWatch #1: Inaugural Post - Which witnesses have the most self-votes?steemCreated with Sketch.

In the digital community of Steemit, Witnesses are our version of elected officials, literally. They are chosen by popular vote and the top 19 (plus one other witness, randomly selected) process the majority of the transactions that occur on Steemit, and in turn are rewarded with Steem. Everyone has a say in who these top 19 are and each user has 30 active witness votes that they can place on the available witness accounts. These votes can be removed at any time.

There is a lot more to the role of the witnesses, and if you want more information @pfunk and @someguy123 have created some very informative posts that outline these roles.

You can find them here and here.

WitnessWatch is an initiative to provide more transparency to the witness position, especially when it comes to the top 19 witnesses. The goal is to provide unbiased, data-based information that allows Steemians to make educated decisions on the witnesses they vote (or don't vote) for. Each WitnessWatch post will unpack various data points on Steemit's top witnesses, and those that are vying for a top 19 slot.

So, for our inaugural post, here is a sneak peak of what you can expect from our initiative:

This is a chart of the top 20 witnesses (top 19 plus the random witness for the block assigned) and the number of self votes they've made compared to the number of total votes they've made. Keep in mind that this is not representative of votes for other accounts owned by these witnesses, but strictly the number of votes each witness account has made for its own posts. In later posts, we will explore the relations of witness accounts to other influential accounts, as well as earnings for each witness.

Here is a zoomed-out version that shows where @pharesim and @good-karma fall on the chart:

One last point we want to emphasize: this initiative will not engage in attacks on individual witnesses, nor is our intent to call into question the integrity of the top 19. The goal is to inform Steemit voters on those that have been elected to represent them.

Lastly, if there is any particular point of data that you would be particularly interested in seeing, let us know in the comment section! This is a democracy after all!

Good informative post on how witnesses work. More people should vote for witnesses as it helps those that do a lot for the Steem network.

Number of downvotes broken into 4 categories.

  1. Plagiarism
  2. Spam
  3. Reward pool dispute - (disagrees with amount of award)
  4. Personal/flag war

I know that would be a hard thing to quantify and quite likely impossible to be done, but it would be nice to know.

I did find your chart to be a little difficult to follow, maybe a simpler bar graph with percentage of self votes. But thank you for taking an unbiased approach to this.

Good suggestion! Yes, as we get into the more complicated scenarios, a big concern is being fair and avoiding attacking (or the appearance of attacking) individuals. The goal is to let the data speak for itself. Thanks for reading!
