The Advantage To Having a Social Media Site (Steem)

Dear SteemIt Inc, Devs and Stakeholders:

One advantage of having a social media site is to bring on Mainstream Users.

Use Case: Natural Marketing

Imagine you don't know a thing about crypto but you googled a topic and found a Steem Article.

Or you heard a friend talking about Steem, so you want to sign up, and you googled Steem.

What Steem now has is a warm lead. It's our job to capture them.

The interested user is motivated to sign up, but by the time they get a user name and password the moment is lost.

If they do still decide to sign in they are dropped onto a page talking about the hierarchy of keys.

It is unlikely this potential user has any idea what a key is and why you are telling them about the hierarchy of keys, because everyone else calls them passwords.

Our goal is to capture the potential user as quickly as possible. They don't understand crypto, but they will learn about it as they read, see incoming votes with $'s attached to it. This curiosity will grow, but only if we capture them.

If we don't capture them it is a missed opportunity.

The solution

There are professionals who design beautiful websites and solve problems using an Interface

At my last job these people were called "Product Managers" They worked with end-users, web-designers and developers to create beautiful interfaces to quickly get people to sign up and get engaged. We are not trying to solve new problems here we are trying to onboard people who use the Internet and while we have them, teach them to safely use Steem to engage in Social Media. Billions of people have a social media accounts. Why are we leading with Crypto instead of leading with the social sites?

Please hire a successful Product Manager who has zero crypto knowledge. Do not hire them because they believe everything you believe and know the same things you know, but hire them because they don't and they will bring a Fresh set of eyes

Let them handle the job of logins plus security... In an easy and elegant solution.

We do not have to worry about people who already understand crypto. If they land here they will be able to figure it out.

This is the second article in a series I am doing which is likely directed to SteemIt, Inc and other people who develop on Steem. I don't have another place to communicate with them directly. While I know they likely will not read it, it makes me feel better to have said it. :) It is my goal to paint a picture for them of who our potential users are and what they need to get up and running on Steem.

Please keep us updated if there is any progress on this, because we are setting up a product aiming at non-crypto users. Here is a short description:

ImpactN supports social and environmental projects globally in exploiting resources. Blockchain and community-building enable direct connection of individuals with similar motivation. Steem upvoting is used to incentivise impactful projects. Steem furthermore enables direct funding be it donations or impact investment. Social networking supports human interaction and sharing of talents.

Using a pretotype we have enabled 500+ school children in Ghana to have access to fresh water. Funding and exchange of data was realised via Steem blockchain, communication via Discord.

At the moment we are building our prototype on Steem. It allows to merge information from several posts into a project overview, supports onboarding of new users via Steem.ninja and utilises Steem’s incentivisation mechanisms. It will be presented at United Nations’ Global Festival of Action. Cooperation with @oracle-D helps us proceed quickly.

Yeah if we could make something that can challenge all those social medias it might be trend powerfully! At this moment, all social medias are banned at my country! But they all forgot STEEMIT and other DAPPS related to it lol :D

This is a good piece. I agree with the idea of hiring a product manager who is unfamiliar with crypto. Marketing in general has been a weak point so far. But perhaps for a reason, since from what I've told, I've understood that making full nodes cheap enough to run is very important. For that to happen, the chain needs to be migrated from Chainbase to RocksDB. That's complicated work and it needs to be tested carefully.

Yeah, but we have to bring on users and keep them busy while we wait for the blockchain to be ready.

I'm so sick of listening to technical people talk about business tactics, updating wallets etc. We need to get people with other skill sets in here.

I think this is a great idea, @whatsup, something that should have happened a long time ago, and something that will continue not to happen unless someone makes it happen. I'm guessing you're talking primarily about people onboarding through Steemit, rather than some other dApp, but the idea is the same. All dApps that do any onboarding should be willing to participate in a page of logos, or something simple like that, similar to the one you have up top, that either describes itself with it's own logo, or with some very short (a few words) description. That should be the landing page, along with maybe some other general information. A universal landing page for STEEM.

My point is there are billions of social media users. Market to them, let them discover crypto.

Stop trying to market to the crypto crowd. Most of whom already have a bet project.

I keep saying that too, but there doesn't seem to be anyone listening
