You really hit the nail on the head with the fact that the problems really boil down to the users, not the code. The excuse of "the code allows it" gets a little old when you know your actions are purely about yourself and not the community.
Amazing how a few people can mess up a really good thing.
It just depends on the few and their power and influence.
