The day after Mana-ñana

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

The waters were red with the blood of the fallen Powers and the battlefield was devoid of comments and votes. All that was left was an empty shell of a promise of a better future for all where fish could swim without being choked by the dust of spam accounts and a flood of new survivors of the centralized wastelands to populate the new world. And here we are, the day after Mana-ñana on the Steem blockchain. Is there anyone left to witness it?

Ok, so as dramatic as it has all been, we have all had a little bit of time to process, recover and get a bit of a feel for what is going on and, it isn't as rosy as anyone would have liked. There are many lesson to be learned of course and there is plenty of time to play the blame game later but for now, I think that the focus should be on putting together a working approach so people can get back to doing whatever they enjoyed doing before and perhaps find some new enjoyable things to play with.

With some justification, the top witnesses are getting a bit of a bashing but I am still going to take the middle ground and say that I am pretty sure that all of them did whatever they thought was right in whatever circumstances they had. Yeah, there was a lot to be desired in the planning and with the troubles that other witnesses had, I think that now my suggestion made to @roelandp last week to have an off-chain witness update site where all witnesses can get pertinent information quickly and consistently should be employed.

I am still hopeful that over the next days, the equilibrium will be found so that then there is the feedback from the system that gives a chance for any patch deployment to be effective in plugging holes. I am pretty pragmatic in general but since there is absolutely nothing I can do about these issues in the immediate future other than talk about it, I will take a wait and see approach.

Although this hasn't been an ideal experience over the last week and a half, what is great to see is that it shows how engaged (@penguinpablo's stats are going to be lol moments in coming days) people are and how connected they feel to the platform. I still caution however that there is a difference between passion and anger and what many are feeling is anger, but I don't see it as overly helpful in this case. Shit went sideways, we should deal with it the best we can and that means us as users too, not just the witnesses.

It is pretty frustrating for everyone who has limited capacity to do what they want to do but I am not a big fan of going backwards on somethings and instead prefer a new hardfork to combat whatever cockups have been made with this one. I don't think it is actually possible to roll HF20 back now anyway as perhaps too much time has passed.

From a community perspective, it would be much better to implement small change hardforks more often so that then we can have a chance to see how various things interact as well as never being too far away from the next iteration. More small hardforks would also help the community grow in bahaviours more organically and naturally meaning that future changes will be better suited to the continually changing shape of the user base.

You want some good news though?

Go have a look at trending and take note of everything posted after the hardfork. Looks pretty healthy considering doesn't it? Sure, there aren't 1000 dollar posts there but this is currently number 1 with a massive... 44 dollars!

Not only would trending be much healthier if this was the norm, distribution would be too.

The lesson

There are hundreds of take-aways from this experience and there can be changes and failsafes put in to continually limit risk but there really is one core lesson that covers everything here and in this world:

Do not get comfortable

Things go wrong, witnesses leave, autovotes end, whale sell, @dlive are pricks, competition arrives, people complain, hardware fails... Everything is subject to changes.

There are no guarantees here or anywhere, no perfect system, no security in this world so the best any one of us can do is our best and hope that on any given day, it is good enough. This isn't just winging it though, this is a case of responsibility.

We all have it, even those of us who don't take it.

Maybe when VPs are charged and people have settled their nerves and quarrels, The day after Mañana will be a better day. Until then though, imagine five years from now as if what you think will happen happens. From that distance, how important is your anger today?

There is a longer game to play.

Wow...amazing😙😙

I am loving the Hot tab right now. It gives a glimpse as to what the place could be without bidbots artificially affecting the organic posts. Its like it used to be almost.

I think a lot of people are expressing anger about their RC and saying that they will only be able to do finite actions per day and that is it - which is almost correct. Like VP did it will recharge throughout the day so yeah if you use a lot of it you would be restricted for that moment you ran out but it would not mean you would be goosed for the rest of the day. You would just have to wait a bit and have a breather.

Kills spam stone dead though, awesome!

oooh, i haven't even checked it has been so long :)

I am still hoping it will somewhat balance out or some functions they can offer a level of subsidy to increase capabilities. I don't think 3SP accounts should really be posting too often anyway.

Kills spam stone dead though, awesome!

Spam, comments, votes.. killed it all! ;D

Hehe, Killed it all! Yeah, there might be that :O)

Thanks for this, @tarazkp! :-)

What is great to see is that it shows how engaged (...) people are and how connected they feel to the platform.

Absolutely.
As long as we're complaining, we're still here - right?

One of my biggest takeaways is that, after hf20 we'll be appreciating social interaction even more. If you know that a person is spending some of their valuable mana in order to comment on your post, how will that make you probably feel? :-)

Yes, it's tough and gosh it's exhausting to understand all those new features and numbers and formulas and..... but hey, nobody said that this was supposed to be easy.

Let's enjoy the mana games and keep being positive (yes, I also loved browsing through our temporarily new trending page)!

I agree. I actually love these times where things change. Yes, it would be better with everyone able to be more actively involved but I enjoy the ripples and potential waves they will make :)

Absolutely. There's a lot of potential! People will be accountable for their own doings now and focus on what really matters. Suppesedly the large majority won't want to waste any of their valuable mana for unnecessary statements, so who knows: maybe that'll even lead to a higher quality of content on Steem.

Just dreaming :-))

I’ve not personally been bothered by the snafus, but then I don’t make my living on here. I find it inconvenient that I cannot upvote people for now while I regain VP, but that’s about it.

My real concern, which I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of, is what the intended “new normal” is for how much SP you need to have enough RCs to function on this platform.

Right now someone with default 15SP can only comment twice per 5 days even once recharged. I’m told the cost of actions like commenting are still being calculated. The crucial thing to watch for this next week is how this settles, and whether the devs/company intend to adjust RC cost calculations for plankton, increase delegations for them, or otherwise protect their ability to post should the math work out such that they really can’t any longer.

Devs and the businesses should be concerned about this, normal users should not really aim to live off it yet unless conditions are dire.

The million dollar question.

I think that if it doesn't balance well they will have to go back to a subsidy model where some transactions are covered by steemit by some percentage while still limiting spam.

What is nice so far is to only get real comments. I know some people are missing but some of them who are, I don't miss. All the comments at the moment are real comments.

Some I also don't miss, but I had few spammers. However I have a lot of African followers, and they are mostly MIA right now. Not enough SP.

I have a feeling they are going to have to come halfway on the costs.

Well said. Indeed do not get to comfortable as change is lurking around the corner. Still need more SP to upvote properly. Blessings and yes I enjoyed your article.

yeah, just keep charging up and hopefully things will be better in a day or two.

Loved the intro. And Dlive are pricks!

And Dlive are pricks!

Call it how I see it :D

RC seems to be recharging slower than I would have expected T. Do you know if this is 5 days for full recharge too?

I actually have no idea how that works but I think I remember hearing it has a different regeneration rate but at the time it wan't known or set what it would be.

@gtg ?

In a year when Steem is trading at $20 and everyone complains that we got to buy in at $1... let's remember this moment and remind them that they didn't have to deal with this shit show.

can't wait :D

You are pure wisdom - I'd like to put you in capsules and sell you online!

Sometimes I wish for a "love" button, and then I remember that I hate facebook, so.
A little green up arrow it is, then. My 1¢ vote goes right here!
