Steemit takes out a Noonie

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

I don't know if the title makes sense, but since I likely roped some of you into voting a few weeks back, if you haven't heard, Steemit won the Social network of the Year at the Noonies, hosted by Hacker Noon.

However this is tainted meat:

So far, every one of these competitions that has come about has suffered from a host of voting problems and I wonder - why? Perhaps they should use an immutable blockchain with private keys for their voting mechanisms. I wonder where they could find one...

What would be an interesting service to create on Steem is an out-of-the-box solution that any website could use to run a poll without having to actually be on Steem to vote. This could use numerous verification and sign in methods, and perhaps could utilize NFTs as some kind of vote marker. Whatever it is, there should be a solution found that can better verify vote count accuracy without having to jump through too many hoops.

It would also be interesting to be able to use a masked digital avatar of some kind that could be verified as human but the verification only reside locally but only one can be registered at a time in something like Keychain. This way, this avatar could be used for online activity and keep anonymity while still being classed an individual human.

I suspect that it would have to be able to verify an already verified document of some kind like a valid drivers licence locally, or perhaps since most phones have a fingerprint scanner, an app could scan a fingerprint and check the verification against the one stored in the phone to unlock it. I dunno.

It would be pretty interesting for websites to be able to implement this kind of mechanism as it would reduce chance of multiple votes as well as bot voting systems. This application could then run on the Steem blockchain and be utilized by non-blockchained websites as a plug-in for blockchain ledger capabilities.

I think that there will be a growing number of uses for blockchain integration into websites for things like account creation, management and voting rights and in time, these could be used as verification mechanisms also.

Anyway, I am too tired and ill to think too much more about it now, but I am glad that Steemit made it to the top of the list, but it is a pity that the number of voters is so low.

At least for now, Steemit can claim to have won a Noonie.

Thanks to all those who took the 10 seconds to vote.

Yay? XD

I was technically voting for steem rather than steemit as I like one of those things

I voted for Steem too, it was a shame the misspelled it.

Argghhhh! The misspell!

But look who came in second... I can see how these right wing white-supremacist dudes can be very dedicated to their cause. Luckily we have better numbers.

TI am surprised the vote counts are so low, but at the same time, a lot of people don't care much about the platform they use, until the feel harmed by it ;)

There is nothing to contest really. Gab.com should just exist as a tribe here on Steem. :)

Good point. I am hoping that in the SMT+community future, more niche online communities start building their presence on Steem. There are so many benefits in doing so that they won't have in traditional forms and, it is possible that Steem could integrate through what they already have too. I see that a Steem powered integration/plugin will be developed that can take existing CMS and forum type platforms and upgrade them.

Yes that is very commendable about steemir. I hope you get feeling better soon @tarazkp

This post has been included in the latest edition of The Steem News - a compilation of the key news stories on the Steem blockchain.

Cheers mate.

Surprised they didn’t incorporate this as a possibility from the beginning considering the nature of the achievement.

I think most CMS don't consider these things at all and most websites are built out of the box through options, not development. This is a reason why people complain about Steem as they are generally used to being on websites that are put together with site builder kits whereas a lot of Steem is being added on the fly.

I can’t remember if there was captcha on the form or not, but that would stop some bots. Anyway if a bot was going to taint votes you wouldn’t you make it win by a landslide?

I think the problem here was double voting as it didn't hold vote records. It was a poorly built mechanism.

So basically they should have admitted their system of recording the votes was shite, instead of accusing the winners of 'fake voting'.

Probably :)

There isn't a good dilution it seems unless verified and then, most don't bother to vote.

Yeah. It's not really the winners fault though and that statement, to me anyway, alludes to 'us' being the issue.

And we conclude our contest, worthless!

I agree, the fact of the matter is that they used a blanket excuse that literally applies to all their pools to throw some shade on steem.

Turning on private mode allowed more votes. It wasn't very smart.

I wonder where they could find one...

Definitely not here that's for sure. This place is so sybil it's a wonder everyone isn't ordered to be on meds.

Yeah, I think you have missed how this could be done though.

If it involves steemit/steem it can't be trusted. If you are talking they set up their own immutable blockchain with keys that might be different.
