EOS Is Now Listed On ShapeShift.io But Do Some Research First, Before You Try Using Steem To Buy EOS Tokens Using Shapeshift!!!

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

More recently, i have been missing out on updates about new cryptos. I did have the intention to follow @dan all the way as he embarked on EOS, but @vivacoin happened just before that and a ton of whitepapers and roadmaps to read.

Today, i decided to look at the EOS tokens and find out if it easy to get some. I had seen recent posts, speaking of the token being available on kraken etc and today, i saw it listed on coinmarketcap.com on number 12.

Getting Some EOS tokens

Ofcourse, the first inclination is to go the easy route, which is the quick external exchanges, those that don't require trading!

First target was to see, if there is any of the popular instant exchanges such as @blocktrades @changelly or @shapeshift, had the EOS token enlisted and i ended up finding it listed on shapeshift.io

Note: Steem was temporarily available on shapeshift.io at the time:

Hahaha, i was total novice to what EOS is about really, so i wondered where to get an EOS wallet address as required above and ofcourse, i had to do some reading here: https://eos.io/instructions

To get EOS tokens, you will need to send ETH to the Ethereum smart contract address as designated by EOS, which will be reserved for you to claim after the window period you chose closes.

The minimum Ether amount require to participate in the distribution is 0.01.

Basically, the EOS token is built on Ethereum thus, the wallet address we seek, is an Ethereum address. Infact, the wallet address for the EOS ICO token distribution is this: 0xd0a6e6c54dbc68db5db3a091b171a77407ff7ccf

Do I Just Send Some Eth To Address Above Using The Shapeshift Exchange?

I have had issues before with USDt, when trying to convert steem to USDt. Most external exchanges simply don't know how to process such transaction because they simply won't know where to send your USDt to. The USDt token uses the bitcoin blockchain, thus, a USDt address is a bitcoin address. So if your generated usdt wallet address was from an external exchange like coinbase, @poloniex or @bittrex, how do you claim your tokens!

Hahaha, the above, is one reason to use decentralized wallets or exchanges, in which case, you own the keys!

Due to the experience i had with usdt, i need to research some more before i attempt to send some bitcoin, to the EOS token distribution address above. It helped!

Basically, my simple question is, why is EOS token listed on shapeshift.io; when the EOS.io says this below:

Please review the following before sending ETH

For a wallet to compatible to participate in the token distribution, such wallet must meet one of the following criteria:

  • It must be able export your private key.
  • It must be able to use the EOS Token Distribution Web App.
  • It must be able to call arbitrary contract methods.

EOS Tokens cannot be claimed unless you have the ability to claim them and for that, you will need to hold all keys and parameter details required, to perform the 'claim' and 'register' methods on the EOS Token Distribution Contract.

Overall, the advice is not to use the external exchanges, when trying to purchase EOS tokens i.e If you send ETH to the EOS Token Distribution Contract; 0xd0a6e6c54dbc68db5db3a091b171a77407ff7ccf using an external exchange (shapeshift.io in this case), your EOS Tokens will be allocated to the exchange's ETH account, and you may never receive or be able to claim your EOS Tokens, simply because you don't have their private keys etc.

What do you think may have happened if i had sent a huge sum of bitcoin to shapeshift.io, inorder to get some EOS tokens, would i have been able to claim them? I doubt it.

I Did Partial Experiments

I was going to try play with some ethereum, since i had some and below is the best video i found, to start the process. It involves the use of google chrome, a chrome extension called "metamask" which you can find on metamask.io and the EOS distribution interface

video source/credit to: @sandwich/youtube

The above tutorial is a pretty straightforward tutorial but in my case, metamask didn't integrate well with the EOS distribution interface, after many trials. Thus, i jumped to trying myetherwallet and i am still in the process of figuring things out on there.

I have experimented with it a bit and there is actually need for your private keys to be able to actually claim your token after the EOS distribution ends. I will do a more elaborate post about how to by

For right now, the only way i see shapeshift being applied in buying EOS token with steem is, if you sent steem to @blocktrades @shapeshift or @changelly to get Eth into the wallet addresses generated from metamask.io, myetherwallet, mist etc then you can send eth from these wallets to the EOS Token Distribution Contract Address; 0xd0a6e6c54dbc68db5db3a091b171a77407ff7ccf!

Then you can claim the claimables.

Will do an elaborate tutorial, when i have had success getting some EOS tokens. In meantime, i hope @shapeshift or a steemian who has more tech/crypto knowledge can explain if it is indeed possible to buy EOS tokens directly using shapeshift.io since they have it listed on there.

My Advice

Did you post the right video?

From metamask Twitter: "For the stability of our service, we’ve been forced to (hopefully temporarily) block the EOS contract. Details here: https://t.co/rCBQuBAYKw".

I did not have the balls to click 'play'.

It is all good now. Thank you! It was a skippable ad that popped up and i copied the link instead of the main video!

Gosh it was an error, an ad came up in between and i copied the url instead of the main video! Thank you alot!

Why is there a movie trailer in the middle of your post ?

Who knows, why does he spam users with walls of texts in transactions?

Hi acidyo, i only do that to enable my manual effort with #steemgigs which is really hard. All the people i send message to are people that have shown interest to #steemgigs. And the steemgigs community is one that they are likely to want to be part of. Most of the compilation is manual and requires help. This is a small document that is being compiled https://quip.com/yjaOA6I6sPbW#RPKACAtX7Yh

The video above has also been mixed. A skippable ad popped up and i ended up using the wrong url

Alright, but there has to be a better way, chats or comments on their posts instead. This seems really pushy.

Haha I didn't get that 0.001 Steem yet! :D

Ya, that's pretty strange.

I made an error and did even know, the url that i ended up copying was from a skippable ad that popped up during the video!

Hi transisto, I made an error and did even know, the url that i ended up copying was from a skippable ad that popped up during the video!

Great post man keep sharing very informative.

The video is fixed now, i put up the wrong video in error!

Thank you for your information. Thank you for your support. Please let me know more+follow
