Dear Steem, What Exactly Happens When We Use The Promoted Content Feature? Share Your Experience!!!

in #steem9 years ago (edited)

So, growing up in school, way back and in high school, there were these categories of students; they had all these amazing questions or perhaps unanswered questions and they just wouldn't stand up to pose these questions, when the time arose. I used to notice at the time, that it was either because they were shy or especially as they were afraid of getting bullied for having posed a seemingly silly question.

I ended up becoming their voice; and would pose as many questions as possible, perhap,s i can exhaust and cover their questions in my series. Then, when my question start to cause traction and interaction, that is when they would stand up and join the party.

Some of my questions here are posed to also possibly touch on questions that other Steemians may have as well as to get answers to mine!

My question today is a 'small series', covering 'promoted content' of steem:

* What exactly happens when you promote a post on steem?

(I haven't seen a post that fully explains, on how this mechanism works).

* Does it have any real effect and how is its effect explained: If one promotes a post with 10 SD, how much more effect does that have compared to promoting the same post, with 1SD?

* Can you filter or choose preference as to what audience you want; to view your post, so as to keep your promoted post relevant and perhaps targeted?

* So how do you exactly choose an audience? Will this function, if used; make posts appear in people's feeds or will the posts just sit, in the promoted category; and for how long; and if it will only sit in the promoted category, under how many tags; is it under all the tags chosen for your post; or are you allowed to designate tags on your own, solely for the sake of the promoted post?

* I have never used this feature before: I have clicked on it however; and it does say, to promote your posts in the promoted content section. Okay, so how long will one's post stay on there, if for instance, he uses 1SD to promote his post?,

* Do people really check the promoted content section? (I just checked it out today, after months of being on steem).

* Do whales look in promoted content section

* Does a post promoted; give it more authority?

Side question:

* What is hardfork?

* The inability to mention users, in a way that they get notified or invited to a conversation, is that a bug or was that how it was meant to be?

(for instance, if i mentioned @sykochica, she never knows that i did unless i inform her)

Personally, I believe the "promote" aspect should be re-vamped. My solution is as follows:

  1. Nix the "Promoted" tab. Truly, few actually peruse there. I believe promotions should happen in the "Feed" tab.
  2. An article becomes promoted by paying steem dollars (SD or SBD) as is currently.
  3. An article is promoted one hour for each steem dollar paid. (1 SD = 1 hour)
  4. The promotion result is the article remains at the top of the "Feed" tab for the amount of time paid.
  5. The FIFO (First-IN-First-Out) rule should apply. For instance: Article A is promoted at 8 am for 5 SD. This article shall remain at the top of the Feed tab for 5 hours.
Article B has been promoted at 8:03 for 2 hours. It shall be positioned just below Article A for the entire 2 hours.
Article C has been promoted at 8:04 for 10 hours with a cost of 10 SD. It shall be positioned just below article B for 1 hour 59 minutes, then just below Article A for 2 hours 56 minutes, then enjoy the top position for the remaining 3 hours 55 minutes.
I would suggest to also set limits such as, 'no post can be initially promoted for more than a certain number of hours,' and 're-promoting cannot be done until the expiration of the initial promotion, or after a waiting period of a specific number of hours.' This would allow other posts to rest at (or at least closer to) the top few positions for at least a while. If readers decide to promote, the promotion would occur concurrent with the current promotion. If the reader's promotion causes the posting time to be extended, so be it. Just make it so that the author cannot promote it again until the expiration of the initial promotion time (plus any reader's promotions). This way the post goes to the bottom of the posting section of the Feed. This should discourage spamming or repeated postings for extended periods of time.
  6. Ensure the 'promoted' section is segregated from the non-promoted section with a line and notice stating the end of promoted posts (in small print), or something similar (as the ads and actual articles are segregated on Google search.
  7. Allow only 2 promotions by the author per post, and only 1 or 2 promoted posts per author per month (or so). This should further discourage spamming of the posting section.
    Any thoughts on this?

as simple as this. my thoughts are exactly as yours but how do we get our voice heard. posts dont really get seen, like this post for instance and the tag or mention method of @username to invite people into a discussion doesnt work either to have people invited to conversations for their feedback so can we do at this point. important comments like yours get lost with posts that never get seen. i thouht of using the promoted content but like you said in your comment; the method of promotion here doesnt appear viable or it is mostly that i dont understand it. having promoted content in the feeds has very much more essence

i saw you reply late!

Interesting Article here, i'll be on the look out if i find anything !
Check out this Article -Harfork 0.16.0
It's pretty much an update to STEEM's Blockchain or Steemit which is build on top of STEEM

kk i will read the article you left, but may i please ask, the mention user option, why doesnt it work, is that how it was meant to be or is it a bug. i see so many posts where they mention users, like @steemitguide for instance within the post and some of these post really require like feedback or so and i am sure those steemians feel that the person they mentioned will get notified of the mention but it really doesnt work that way. is that how steem was made to work or is that like a bug?

really how do people get invited to conversations on steemit?

What exactly happens when you promote a post on steem?

Your Steem Dollars are transferred to the null account where they are destroyed. This deflationary policy means that the value is redistributed to everybody.

Does it have any real effect and how is its effect explained: If one promotes a post with 10 SD, how much more effect does that have compared to promoting the same post, with 1SD?

The promoted content sections orders posts by how much they have been promoted. Where you end up on the page is the result of a market. The more people wanting to promote their content, the harder it will be to become the top promoted post.

Do whales look in promoted content section?

Yes, I do.

Does a post promoted; give it more authority?

Someone had to pay to get the post promoted, so they must believe it has value.

thank you a lot for the effort you put in replying. but can you please explain the first answer a bit more; about have the steem dollars paid "are transferred to the null account where they are destroyed. This deflationary policy means that the value is redistributed to everybody". i didnt understand it well. and if you used 1 sd opposed to 10 sd, it still depends on how many people promoted their posts or on how much they used to promote their post?

Let's say there are 1000 STEEM and 10 SBD. If you consider SBD as the blockchain's debt, then we have 1% debt. If somebody pays 1 SBD to promote a post, we now have 1000 STEEM and 9 SBD, so we now have 0.9% debt. The benefits of the reduction in debt are shared by everybody.

The promoted ranking is based on the total amount used to promote, not number of people. So 10 SBD by 5 people is more than 5 SBD by one person.

Can you please clarify the last response:

*Does a post promoted; give it more authority?
Someone had to pay to get the post promoted, so they must believe it has value.

Other than the poster believing the post has value, what good is promoting a post with more than 1 SD (other than the community benefits of destroying the currency as in your first response)? What value is given to the promoted post when promoting with more than 1 SD provide?

Honestly, I don't think anyone uses the promoted tab to access new content.. I've promoted stuff to the top of the promoted tab several times with very little voting/viewing impact.

yep, exactly! i tell you, i was here since august and only checked the promoted tab once, when i wrote this post. there are many questions, i wonder where to pose them to get the answers and for the benefit of a post, i end up preferring to write a post.

We should take a page out of YouTube's "Trending" page, and show promoted content as the index page and subscribed feed as the alt tab.

We could also experiment with alternative views for promoted content, imagine the million dollar web page except the image is either your account avatar or the thread thumbnail, the link goes to your post and the size of the link matches your promoted/burned SBD value.

exactly, but how do we get this heard. another person in the comments and me share your views!

Probably best to talk during popular crypto podcasts such as beyondbitcoin or the steemit podcasts. Could also raise a github issue?

i really have many unanswered questions and deep down i still feel a post is the best way to tackle this as steemit is still in beta and other noobs like me can benefit too. i do have many unanswered questions. i did this rush post at work, please read it. do you know that in the past few days, i can even get views on my post let alone upvotes. things have really suddenly and drastically changed. it was never like this a few days ago. do you think something has gone wrong? it bugs me. i used to be on tsu and was getting a a few views at least but they had an update the period before the social media halted and all changed, it became impossible to get views, is that happening on steemit? https://steemit.com/steemit/@surpassinggoogle/has-the-steemit-hardfork-started-yet-and-is-it-affecting-post-visibility-i-no-longer-get-views-on-my-posts
