INTRODUCING MY COURSE PART II

Hello steemians, am Olanipekun adebola segun and this is the second series of introducing my course (Quantity surveying), in this series I will lecturing you on taking off and bill of quantities as promised in the previous series which is the main task of a quantity surveyor. Quantity Surveyor
I told a quantity surveyor is professional or expert working within the construction industry concerned with procurement, cost and contracts. A quantity surveyor is known as cost engineer or cost estimator, they reduce the cost of a project for their clients maintaining the value for money and achieving the required standard and good quality of the project.

What is Taking-off
Taking off is the process of recording dimensions in to a special sheet called the take off paper, this involves reading and scaling of dimensions from a drawing and entering them in a standard format in a dimensioning paper, this can also be define as the process of identifying elements and construction works that can be measured and priced.



What is a bill of quantities?
A bill of quantities is a contract document in which all materials, parts and labour are be itemzed, it also shows the details terms and condition of the contruction or repair contract and itemizes all work to enable the contractor to prepare his tender according to his bill. The bill of quantities is issued to contractor (tenderers) so as to prepare a priced bill for carrying out works .The prime purpose of the Bill of Quantities (BQ) is to enable all contractors tendering for a contract to price on exactly the same information. The priced document is then used as a control document throughout the construction process.

Preparation of the Bill
This section is known as the ‘’working up’’ it is the second section of the bill of quantities which is the preparation of bill.

1. squaring and dimensions: this is the calculation of volumes, areas etc. Squaring the dimensions and entering the resulting lengths, areas, and volumes in the squaring column which is the third on the dimension sheet.
2. Abstracting this is Transferring the squared dimensions to a special sheet called the abstract sheet, where they are written in a recognised order, ready for billing under the correct work heading.
3. Billing : this is collecting items together and presenting them in a recognised bill order The items of work which make up the total building are listed in the appropriate work section heading which gives the description of the item and the recognised units of measurement. The bill is upriced, the clients gives it to the contractor to price it.
   

Tender Documents
This is a set of documents issued to tendering contractors to ensure that all the contractors follow the same rules and prepares on the same basis of the consultant, the documents include the project drawings, Boq and other tendering document together with the form of tender and formal invitation to tender.

Arbitration
This is a procedure where two parties in dispute agree to be bound by the decision of an independent third party who is the arbitrator. The role of an arbitrator is just like that of the judge.
