Steem is a Men's world!

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

I sometimes feel wonder by seeing how small the number of females in Steem compared to other social media. I don’t have any accurate data about the male-female proportion or don't have any idea if there any. You can let me know if you know that.

If you see the top Steemians you will understand the truth. But, yeah there are different profound steemians, some community leaders who are female. And some of them are rocking the platform. But, when it comes to common users like me, I can see only a few female faces in Steem world. Which is very unfortunate. You may argue that 'the world is dominated by men so why not steem'? My point is, if females are dominating other social media then why not Steem?

I know people even don't know about Steem that much. Maybe that's why. Or maybe as females are not that much into financial things, that's why. But the second one is hard to believe.

Then why?

I don't know if my prediction is true or if you consider this as a prediction or not. But I think every female doesn't have an interest in content-based social media. Rather they have more interests in the photo or video-based social media. I don't know how you gonna react to it. Because I can't present any data or can't give validation to it. But this is what I have experienced while calling my female friend to join Steem!

They don't seem interested to go through 'hard to read' (yeah, I got this from them) contents to get some small rewards. Rather it's more preferable to be in other social media with comfortable people around to exchange appreciation.

I totally understand I should not compare Steem to other social media. But you know, sometimes I feel like, Why shouldn't I?

Steem is expanding and I can see a very bring future of it. So, considering it a social media is totally okay for me. Moreover, we can get a little money for what we do here.

And if you talk about the diversity of content in Steem; there's a lot actually. You can share your lifestyle, your philosophy, photography to whatever you want. There are also different dapps which are adding much value to this platform. And I hope that in the upcoming days the scenario will be a lot different.

Actually this topic came to mind as I'm a female and I have faced some awkward situation for this. My Steem name is a little wider so people usually guess me as a male (in this male world) and treat me like that way.

Call your female friends to join steem. Let's expand this Steem world and make a good habitat for females.

Much Love

UGH male arrogance. It's not just Steemit. It is anything digital. It is assumed that the other person is male. As I have been told "didn't want to insult you, by calling you a girl." No you just insult me by assuming I'm a guy.

Not sure there is anyway around this without creating a 'girly' name. In games it doesn't matter at all.

I do interact with more female then males on Steemit though. I think that's one thing I like about it. To me there seems to be more females, but that could be due to the circles I run in.

I know there's nothing to do with the proportion of male and female in steemit. But my point was as women are more dominating in other social media, then why not in steemit. Maybe because of 'so many things'. I don't include any account which have 'unisex' name. But I mostly interact with males. Maybe that's why got this in my mind.

I have actually been asked, "Why are you here?" by some men who think the blockchain is only for men. It is so strange, that attitude!

@thekittygirl you said my words, girl. That's what it is. People asks, how do I find steemit? Who thought me crypto. Like seriously?
And um blessed that I find PHC where I meet most of the amazing woman.

The name is always confusing.
But with the girl on gown in her icon. You can identify is a she.

Maybe or maybe not. Without all the confusing names, I can see more men's faces. There's no way more women are hiding behind those confusing names! 😅

it is very difficult to know if there are more women than men or not in steem because the majority of us use username which are not our real names and our profiles very often represent what we wants to share that has nothing to do with our sexual identity

Yeah, I understand that. But I only counting on the people I know are man or woman. And I personally didn't come across many women. Maybe it's my bad or maybe they are less in number.

I would call 50/50 on this one, hidden behind a name are some exceptionally talented woman as well as men.

As for financial side of life, woman run a home, they know how to work with money, you won't get food on the table without some smart lady normally budgeting in the background.

Spending time reading content, well I think both genders enjoy reading topics they enjoy. Will be interesting to know the outcome if you ever tackle the stats.

I'm a woman and there is no way I meant by my words that woman are not good at 'money’. But they sure are lagging behind earning it through online or have little knowledge about crypto, as I personally find it in my society.

As I'm part of different community and steemit groups, I personally don't come across lot of women. And when it comes to different dapps or tags, the proportion make me wonder. Like dlike, sportstalk, actifit or appics. As women are dominating in other social media they can easily use micro content creation sites in steemit. But I understand people don't know much about Steem, maybe that's why.
I know some don't want to reveal them but I counted on only who do do so.
It would be a great experience to see how women dominates in this crypto world too. We should try to convince other women to join Steem. But to be honest, I have tried but they don't seem interested as it's complicated to understand and doesn't look exiting in regards of content or rewards.

Perhaps women don't go out promoting at the top of their voice, taking a quieter stance of working quietly in the background, perhaps as a gender we need to learn to be a lot more vocal.

I am with you girl ! And the ladies that are here RULE BIG TIME they do goooooddddd

That is an interesting observation. I've not thought about it a whole lot since I think I interact with a pretty equal proportion of men and women on the blockchain. Perhaps it is more because I focus a lot on food in my blogging and the content I consume? Maybe there is a larger percentage of women in that sphere. I can definitely attest to some of what @fionasfavourites commented on in that I am not very tech-savvy. So I might not have made it on here without my boyfriend nudging me because I didn't understand crypto at all. Not sure if that might be part of why there seems to be more men. Definitely food for thought.

That is my sense, too, @plantstoplanks: I interact with as many men as I do women. In my case I think it has to do with my eclectic range of interests that are sometimes reflected in my writing, but which means that I follow and engage with an equally wide range of people on the platform.

That said, from a social and demographic point of view, it's an interesting question. As is the age profile of Steemians and their geographical location.

You can see I have a background in human geography....🤭
