I agree that something needs to be done for Steemit's first impression. I've tried to recruit new users and many, if not most, were not interested in the content displayed by default (I.e. Trending posts). I think there needs to be a more obvious presentation of topic choices to attract more users. Perhaps a special intro page for non- and prospective members where a topic of interest may be chosen for a more favorable first impression, for example.
