That's why contests work so well, don't they? People feel connected to a bigger community and will gladly stick around. And in general, we need to reward other Steemians more for various activities. As simple as giving them a 5 percent upvote for a thoughtful comment will go a long way.

@curie even has a commenting contest where people could actually be rewarded by Steem. I have won some Steem this way on a couple of occasions. They require to comment on posts that @curie has upvoted.

And because all these posts are rather high quality, I actually learned a lot and made some new friends from commenting 13+ times a day on these posts.
