The Latest Censorship of [REDDIT] and Why This is Good For Steem!

in #steem8 years ago (edited)

Large social media companies will sit there and tell you that the content they provide is uncensored and unbiased. Well, that simply isn't true!

Well, that simply isn't true!

This isn't a surprise to most of us here on Steem since some (a lot) of us came here to be part of a uncensored discussion driven by the community. The financial incentive didn't hurt either :).

In the latest example of censorship and moderation on Reddit, Donald Trump held a AMA (ask me anything) and over 2000 accounts were banned.

Again, most of us won't need reminding that the Right to Free Speech is America's first amendment. This right is something that makes us American. It's first for a reason, the founding fathers left nothing to chance. At a time when free speech was condemned and often persecuted, they made sure this basic freedom was front and center when creating our country. Anyways, enough history, let's get back to the issue at hand.

Not only did the moderators ban these accounts, for what seemed like harmless questions (see the twitter post below) but they bragged about it stating,  "Yes, we will ban troublemakers. Yes, we will remove trolling comments. Yes, we mean it when we say we'll throw anyone over our walls who fails to behave themselves.".

Yes, we will ban troublemakers. Yes, we will remove trolling comments. Yes, we mean it when we say we'll throw anyone over our walls who fails to behave themselves.

The man was banned for asking about tax returns. Huh?

Policed, yet again by the Reddit Nazi's for simply exercising our First Amendment Right of free speech. This is simply unacceptable.

Why is this great for Steem?

Well that's pretty simple. If you can't exercise free speech on Reddit then users will start using a platform where you can. Enter stage right Steem!

Some complain about the bots (maybe be warranted). Some complain about the unfairness and the 'circle jerk' that is happening. This will iron it self out. Some complain about shit content making it to the top. The community decides not one person. Some complain about woman getting voted up for having assets. Don't be jealous for christ sake.

Even with these complaints one very important thing remains and that is we are all free to speak and say what we wish without the threat of censor ship!

we are all free to speak and say what we wish without the threat of censorship!

Yeah, votes will decide on steemit, and auto regulate the platform on the long term, the Algo is getting improved by the team everytime

Agree, things will iron themselves out. It's still very early. People are inherently inpatient.

Let them come in droves. We are waiting patiently for their community interactions. :)

Amen to that !
