Thoughts on the idea of Pay to Play Steem

in #steem6 years ago

Once a month there is a witness panel on @mps-waves and of course, as it happens every single month many of the doubts and concerns the steem community may be having at the moment get addressed.

I would strongly recommend everyone to watch/listen to today's talk if they have two hours to spend on it. As always @aggroed uploaded the recording to his blog:

https://steemit.com/msp-waves/@aggroed/steem-witness-forum-recording

What I wanted to address on this vlog is this whole notion that the "mission" of this platform is to make it a place for only the rich, to kill engagement if you will. Many things were said of course on the forum, but this is my take on the whole matter.

At any rate, I'm glad to see the costs of transacting going down and for interaction to be creeping up as it should already. I don't think i've seen so many voting bars so high up since I've joined.

As always, much love

@meno

Thank you so much for providing some valuable thoughts about HF20!

And really like bandwidth things that control spam commenting !

Have a lovely day :)

You're most welcome brother and I'm glad to hear :)

Have a lovely day !

thank you for stopping by brother!

:)

I am definitely going to give it a week and two, though not pessimistic I think the ripple is going to last longer. People is unsure of what and how much they can do, they stopped commenting snd voting and even with reasonable rc back they hesitate to upvote or comment when they should have done before. I have seen videos of people absolutely discouraged and if onlybfor the lack of communication this has been a hurries messy step. I know if it was done there are reasons as sustainability. Again those restrictions will affect mostly to the smallest precisely the ones you want to engage and keep. For me, I see no big deal, i wait, and will see but the fact is that it has caused a little exodus even with those replenished just when we had a low retention. I agree with you, time tell but I recommend you see for example @snook video (usually supee cheerful) people is feeling that way and just been told to "hope" or "trust" dealing with new confusing and even conflicting informations. And users should not feel that way. Oh my comment getting long, might be too expensive... Lol
Just kidding
Not editing typos though
Just kidding too that is just laziness

I think the breach between snaller and bigger accounts is gonna grow
Sounding a bit gloomy like @hedac but kind of realist
Steemit will survive this
Will be more sustainable... Maybe
A better user experience? maybe not

Is this analogous to giving another week for a further FBI investigation? jajajajaja... You da man, meno!
I continue to hope for the best and prepare for the worst - it just is what it is... Thank you, brother!

It is good to be back meno, I missed Steemit :)
resteemed ....because I have the power!!!!

Great video. Coincidentally the HF20 took place while I have been mostly afk from steemit. Good advice as always meno. I'm seeing upvotes with value coming back so I'd imagine you are correct with everyone "forgetting" about the whole RC issue.

Great perspective as things improve for everyone! I think it is good this has raised concerns as it demonstrates the passion the users feel regarding their engagement here. I love your words regarding people being the value as thatbis absolutely true. Why go to a free platform like FB to be the product when you can be your own here? This will improve and I too believe that the intention of this is to better assign value to operations to avoid abuse. No way will the ecosystem succeed without the small accounts which still represent over 90% of the active population here.

No way will the ecosystem succeed without the small accounts which still represent over 90% of the active population here.

that's right my friend... no one can deny this, no one.

Great idea to test out usability with a low-SP sock puppet account so we can get a first-hand idea of what's going on!

BTW this is @overkillcoin

there you go... this is a tiny account here my friend, reply to me a few times, lets see your "taxes"

I was thinking the same thing as well — It would be sheer insanity if the devs/witnesses intentionally switched on "pay-to-play" greedy mode in an effort to sink smaller accounts or convert them to investors. ESPECIALLY at the bottom of a bear market and with competition (albeit mostly shoddy knockoffs with stupid names ☺) on the rise!

To everyone undergoing full-on panic, please give the big fish more credit, they may be heavily influenced by greed... but they're not going to kill their golden goose. The safer, sustainable and reasonable path to riches would be to help minnows and plankton FLOURISH!

so you've done 8 actions with a dust account, and you are still alive! check that out...

and cost of RC is still going down.

It's not too bad for minimal SP...

Last fall @taskmaster4450 started a programme of adopting a minnow with the goal of getting them to 1000 SP, but why not adopt 10 plankton with the goal of getting them to 100 SP?

Agreed... 5 SP is not much at all... so even now this is a little win.

they would have to be real myopic to not see what they would be doing to their investment.

I'm already down to 59% RC (before making this comment)!

The valuation of Steem is tied to it's hopes and dreams.

One of those dreams was "mass adoption," and "pay to play" would end that dream, as the masses do NOT pay for social media. In fact, the masses are quite happy to get their social media for free, thank you very much, and it was only the promise of BEING PAID that would tempt them out of their facebook rabbit holes and their youtube burrows.

If the mass adoption dream dies, that leaves the prospect of a higher Steem valuation teetering on the risky precipice of SMTs. SMTs are promising, but risky, because so far no entity (eg not STINC) has shown any aptitude or skill for marketing the Steem blockchain, leaving the marketing, by and large, to users.

While viral user marketing worked to propel the twin dreams of "mass adoption" and "cutting out the middleman," it will not work for SMTs, as communities considering tokenizing their content will want a party to talk to, before committing to the Steem blockchain for SMTs. They will want assurances of reliable service.

This means that the future of Steem, under pay-to-play will necessarily need to become much MORE centralized, probably under STINC's as-yet-unproven marketing and sales forces, to achieve widespread uptake of SMTs.

This can succeed, but in my view, allowing the death of the easy and free-to-use mass adoption dream risks putting major downward pressure on the Steem price.

For Steem is but dreams, and allowing one of those dreams to die will push Steem into a very dangerous corner.

Fingers crossed. In the meantime, I will be adding @Fulltimegeek to my witness list, as like the @helpie witness, he dreams rainbows, and dreams big. :)

perfectly said Rodney... which is why I know if there is something we are not aiming to ever do is to take away those dreams.

Yeah, like you said, everyone will have forgotten this all happened in a week.

But they really mustn't. Witnesses should be encouraged to have someone on hand who can explain to them all this jibber-jabber code that almost nobody can read and understand. For next time. :)

Hi meno good video my friend. Greetings from Venezuela.
