Steem NODES went down, before things went South Pole we need to get some facts straight here.

in #steem6 years ago

Literally, 20 hours out of my time yesterday was gone without achieving anything productive, perhaps you wanna ask me the question why? I let the Steem block chain control my to-do-list.
Without exaggerating, some people have an attic and some soft sofa here on the chain where they enjoy their daily activities which means that everything is happening for them on the block chain. I am one of the many poor souls.
They practically don't have another life else where aside from Steemit (although, they're not antisocial).
Yesterday, the 17th of September, 2018, their hustle on the chain was shattered because those who are supposed to manage the control panel of the Steem block chain were at the cinema, lol.

Early hours of yesterday morning, the Steem block chain went down including the other server for developers - www.steemitstage.com without a prompt information from either the team or the witnesses. Basically, this break down isn't the first though, but it was not announced, informed and predicted. Often times, the block chain has been down for maintenance and when such activities would be done. Necessary and adequate notification and information would be disbursed to the block chain users, investors and other related parties.

Some of the grievances showed were from the community users itself and those comments are not really a good one for the public's ears. Meanwhile, in a bid to engage the community, I think the entire Steemit ecosystem demands some explanation for this unprecedented breakdown from either Steemit Inc team or the witnesses.

Also, we would like to clarify some things which seem inexplicable.

What is the job specifications of a witness? And aside from running the blocks, are they saddled with the responsibility of the maintenance?

How can we rate a witness work, progress on the block chain so far in determining how to vote for them.

We'll would sincerely await a reply from the team and the concerned departments. Thank you

I was concerned about Steem being down. I wonder if Witnesses could be more like the way Bitcoin works, but maybe not so much. I think Witnesses should adopt Bitcoin and Bit Torrent ways of doing things in allowing more people, more witnesses, more servers, to upload, download, save, archive, share, distribute, delegate, the Steem blockchain, either completely or in bits and pieces where you are paid money, or paid in Steem, or whatever, for how much of the Steem blockchain you share, like Bit Torrent in some ways, where you get rewarded for helping in the role of being a witness, a server, either completely or as much as you want. I think that we should have unlimited amounts of decentralized, international, servers, witnesses, nodes, etc.

Good questions.

I tried to figure out via Discord and steem.chat:

  1. Who were alert and active on the issue and trying to fix it
  2. Who had the technical knowledge on fixing the issue, for example creating the patches that were needed to come back producing blocks
  3. When the advise 'go back to v0.19.12 was confirmed, who were quick to get there. You can check here who are running the right version and who are still on v0.20.0: https://steemd.com/witnesses

Hope it helps a bit.
