That’s a misunderstanding. There is an early upvoting penalty that is in linear proportion to the delay and that runs from 100% to 0% between 0 and 5 minutes.

@markkujantunen oh gotcha did not know it was just a penalty well that's better than losing everything for voting too early. Thanks for the clarification

Yep. Another name for it is reverse auction. The earlier you vote the greater the share of your curation rewards forfeited. It could be worthwhile if yours is preceded by large enough votes.
