A Review of Steem Stats - What Effect Has HF 21 Had On Activity On Steem

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

Refence: Daily Steem Stats Report - Saturday, October 12, 2019 compiled daily by @penguinpablo.

I won't post the graphs here because I haven't asked for permission to do that but I can comment on the stats here. All the time series run from April 13 2019 to this day. You can open the @penguinpablo's post in another tab.

1. Daily number of Posts (including comments)

There was a clear downtrend from about 60,000 so per day to slightly over 30,000 until HF 21. From HF 21 to this day, the number of posts and comments posted daily has been stagnant and remained somewhat above 30,000.

2. Daily number of votes

The downtrend has continued. About three weeks ago there was a significant drop from 35,000 per day to about 25,000 per day and a slight upward correction to that.

3. Daily accounts transacting

The steady downtrend has continued. HF 21 seems to have had no impact on that figure.

4. Posts + Comments per post

The downtrend continued until HF 21 when the decline stopped. The sum of the number of posts + comments to them has been stable since HF21. Somewhat more engagement since HF 21. Perhaps there has been somewhat more whining. :)

5. New accounts created

No clear downtrend in the last six months.

Can we conclude that HF 21 ruined Steem? No.

Can we conclude that HF 21 put Steem on an upward trajectory? No.

Where the tracks lead us is still shrouded in mystery.

In my opinion, it is too early to draw any conclusions. The is no evidence whatsoever to back up the claim that EIP has caused a lot of Steemians to quit. The decline in the number of accounts transacting daily seems to continue steadily. EIP hasn't put a dent in it. Nor has it exacerbated it.

The decline in engagement seems to have stalled. Who knows, maybe both the cheer leading and the whining and bickering have made up for the decline in the number of accounts transacting. :) I do know that vote farming by posting and bid botting nonsense is down. I've been engaged in stamping out that practice myself together with the other @steemflagrewards people.

I still think HF21 was a good thing. Regardless what the numbers say..

I agree at least based on what I've personally observed.

When it comes to the number of votes, it would be interesting to see the difference in comment votes pre and post hf21 as I assume that there aren't many comment votes these days

It would stand to reason that the number of comment votes would've dropped by some degree. Comment voting wasn't a big thing for a year because the BTC capitulation event in November 2018 caused the Steem price to crash, too. That's when the dust threshold hit and a lot of people, including myself, stopped upvoting as many comments as I had done so far. But yes, a drop in comment voting after HF 21 would make sense.

Macto effects undetermined, micro effects good.
Nearly everyone I've communicated with on the issue is pleased with new steem.

It will take time to cut out the cancer and heal.
