Rio Olympic Sites Crumbling

in #steem7 years ago

It hasn't even been a year since the Rio Olympics and it's sporting venues and Olympic villages are crumbling.

Brazil was already massively in debt before the games and many people didn't think they could or should afford the massive new debt that has become of hosting the Olympic Games.

What was once a proud occasion and an advert to the world for the host cities is now being avoided like the Zika plaugue. Nobody wants the cost that is hosting the games. Security alone cost 2 billion dollars!

Brazil built baseball fields and golf courses that now sit unused decaying. People in Brazil just aren't interested in those sports, soccer, or football as most call it, is king.

Many venues have already been looted for anything of value and vandalized. Below is a picture of inside of Maracana stadium. Wires have been stripped out of the walls and seats torn up from the stands

Brazil's government officials are well known for being corrupt and violence and poverty is everyday life for the citizens of one of the most populous countries on the planet.

4 of the officials responsible for organizing the Rio games have been jailed for taking bribes from contractors.

Here's a few more pics of some of the venue's..

The pool is filled with rust, flies and garbage. Remember it hasn't even been a year since this place hosted the world's best athletes..

Even the main soccer stadium is in disrepair, the concourse has been looted and vandalized. Even the pitch is drying out, full of ruts and holes

Before the games began there was concern about the polluted water. The kayakers and swimmers were told not to swallow the water or train too long in it before the actual events that they were competing in would start.

Some effort was made to clean it up but it was still disease laden. Very sad state of affairs. Poor locals were forced to uproot thier shanty homes and moved out to make room for the village. Giant concrete walls were erected that led from the airport to the village so visitors wouldn't see the slums and the actual way people in most of Brazil live.

It's disheartening to think the poor citizens of Brazil that were already struggling to get by are now stuck with paying the extra 40 billion dollars that hosting these games has left them. Most of the infrastructure that was built is already crumbling and it will either be taken back by nature of be torn down at more cost to the tax paying people

Sort:

fucked up! 😠

That's putting it bluntly lol

It's crazy, isn't it? How irresponsible for a government like Brazil to take on this kind of debt to build this and then have it waste away like this. It's all about money, man. They figure it would bring in thousands and thousands of foreigners who would bring money into Brazil. But how long does the Olympics last? a few weeks? and then it's done. It's a joke.

It used to be billed as an opportunity for host cities to show off and advertise themselves to the world. To build infrastructure like roads and transit like trains and subways that they'd have after the games. To have new sporting facilities and such but the fact is..if they wanted those things or needed them they should/could just build them. The Olympics doesn't guarantee them revenue mostly just crushing debt. Security like I wrote is 2 billion! That's crazy. Cities are getting smarter and actually pulling their bids out. It's a hot button topic because Calgary in my country is thinking about trying to host again. Last time they had the winter Olympics it was actually successful and they have alot of the venue's already existing but imo and alot of others it's just not worth it. There are actually very few examples of cities hosting the games and profiting from it. The IOC rules are too strict on what the host cities have to do..until they change that and scale it back the debt is going to crush whoever hosts them. Most cities just can't afford it..Brazil definately couldn't!

Sounds like it's just for their "ten minutes of fame." Of course the government of whichever city would love the publicity, but the accounting later would give me a nightmare lol.

The money they spend could have been used better. I remember back in 2010 when Singapore hosted the youth Olympics, we had a budget overrun by 200 mil and there are alot of shady things that goes behind the screens of those Olympics official. I over heard some of the delegates official from third world countries talking on comparing the price of brand goods in Singapore and Europe and discussing where to buy them but in my head I'm thinking, your countrymen already don't have enough food to feed themselves but you guys are here enjoying the high life 😒

Makes you think....

Thank u for checking out my blog @drobinson. Pls follow me if you liked this? I'm new but getting better every day! Cheers
