How do tags work? Why are some tags inaccessible on the front page?

For example, the politics tag has effectively disappeared from the front page search bar, as seen below. 


Why is this? The tag is still accessible from here: https://steemit.com/trending/politics

For some reason 'polotics' is in the list of front page tags:

This is super concerning to me, as it seems like this could totally stifle discussion of completely worthwhile and important topics. Can anybody shed light on how the tag categorization system works?
