Steemit: The Great Experiment

in #steem8 years ago (edited)

As a follower of crypto I see a lot of altcoin projects go by, and for quite some time steem and steemit were not registering on my radar. But the recent prices rise in steem caught my attention and I started to look into them. I've often felt like an outcast in the crypto sphere because, even though I am far from anti-market, most in crypto would consider me a socialist of sorts. I don't think the free market is the solution for everything. I don't think money makes everything pure and pristine. So when I started to learn about steemit my first reaction was "what the [expletive deleted]...".

The idea of putting a text out there and potentially be instantly monetized is definitely disruptive. But in what direction? Will we be fed a lot of insincere waffle? Will we all turn into Pewdiepie and just churn out inoffensive blobs of text? And Is that a good thing? Thus far my impression is that steemit is remarkably heavy on quality content. Interesting blogs from people who's got interesting stories to tell and are both promoted by and, I assume, encouraged by the monetization aspect. What I've also found is that a few notable people I know of from elsewhere in crypto are making posts I would have never thought possible. Succinct, informative, well structured posts without the crazy rants, innuendos and accusations I've come to expect. Is monetization a civilizing force then? I find this hard to believe. Or at least I did. But as I read through my own post I must admit I find it much more mellow than my usual internet rants.

But I am curious to see what it takes to gain traction in this community. Will posts like these be sufficient? Can I make the big moneyz writing down random thoughts on this platform? In the early stages I guess low quality posts from complete nobodies, like this post, could gain some traction. But at the moment there's a lot of "cheap money" in the system. In that sense steemits "Golden Age" of opportunities probably has a time limit. With that in mind, I am curious to see what happens when steemit equivalents to dramaalert, or similar, starts popping up. When competition really starts tightening its grip. What will happen to "the smalll people" (as the Swedish BP exec so eloquently put it)? And will the platforms incentive structure shield the quality content or will it push it out into the periphery as well?

And again, will we all turn into Pewdiepie?
