Kaboom! Wow I did not see that coming. Out of nowhere the number of daily transactions exploded in the past week to a new alltime-high of 2,522,380 tx in one day! I don't know exactly which day it was, but maybe @penguinpablo can give an answer to that.
That is 500,000 tx more than the old record of 2Million tx in a day.
Where did that come from? Why now, when it was decreasing for the past 6 months. If you have an idea what could have caused this, post it in the comments.
The daily tx are down quite a bit again, but that's normal after such a sudden spike.

There are many services/websites on top of the Steem blockchain.
For example Utopian.io. There were (and probably will be) campaigns/promotions about Steemit and the related services on top of the Steem blockchain.
There are also a popular service, called MinnowBooster.
A lot of people are selling their votes for Steem Dollars (SBD), probably a lot of people cashed/cashing out their earnings.
Thanks to the various challenges on Steemit (including a writing challenge with questions), a lot of people became active in the recent few weeks by participating in these challenges, including me.
The increase in the number of transactions probably came with the increased number of user accounts and with the increased number of active users.
The number of user accounts on Steemit is recently (in the previous few days) (probably three days ago, on 2018.05.16) hit 1 million, which is a huge milestone for Steemit.
I expect further transaction record breaks in the future.
