Putting Some Ice On Dan Larimers' Resignation From Steemit Inc

in #steem8 years ago (edited)

First of all, grab some salt and keep it handy. Everything in the crypto world is so volatile - including this post - that you will need to take some salt with it.

@dan Larimer announced a few hours ago he is resigning from Steemit. Apparently, @ned accepted the resignation and everybody is moving forward.

A few thoughts:

  1. There is this Romanian saying: "long illness means sure death" (boală lungă, moarte sigură). I'm happy the air was cleared somehow. It's better to cut the rope straight and move than survive in a toxic environment. It's the boiling frog metaphor: if you throw a frog in a pot and slowly increase the temperature, the frog will eventually die, without even knowing why. If you just throw a frog in boiling water, somehow the frog will find a way to get out. We were the slowly boiling frog and I could almost see the end. There was a very strong vibe of discrepancy going on, even without communication. You could just feel it around the community, or in the private chat, where almost everything was toxic behavior towards Steem management. So, from this point of view, this was a good move.

  2. I am probably one of the few people left on the planet who wrote their first computer program on punched cards, in Cobol. I've been witnessing - with on and offs - a lot of new technology unfolding. As a programmer, I went from Fortran to Beta Basic, C, PHP, Objective C and beyond. I'm telling you that not to reveal my age, which has absolutely no meaning here, but to give you a little bit of the context to what I'm going to say: the technology created by Dan is nothing short of revolutionary. It's an amazing breakthrough and I'm happy I was around to witness it. Kudoz, respect and admiration for that, Dan! Thank you. I really mean this, I'm very grateful to have been a part of your journey so far.

  3. There are still some possible scenarios in which Dan could come back. I am having a few "Steve Jobs / Apple" deja-vus right now. Everything is possible so no need to act like it's the end of the world. If having Dan on the team will create more value to the Steem ecosystem - something that we really don't know, since we're not part of the team - I'm convinced he will be back. Somehow, sometimes.

  4. Code is not the solution to everything. Steem / Steemit has a very strong interpersonal component. It's not just a crypto-currency, it's also a community. With real people, interacting in real life. Bringing the necessary skills in this area could only build up the momentum which the technology already has. Maybe Dan resignation will open the door to other types of skills here. We shall see.

  5. Change is not only good, but it's unavoidable. So, bring it on!

As always a very constructive comment on the situation here, thanks for that as it is deeply appreciated. All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

When I knew about @dan today, I thought,"What's going on?" Thank you for sharing your opinion with us @dragosroua

Point No. 4 exactly nailed it! We have tons of tech guys but we lack the comms / community aspect sometimes! Thanks for this post @dragosroua

Interestingly during by economics studies they forced me as well to learn COBOL - did not get it at all and decided pure economics is better than tech for me

they forced me as well to learn COBOL

I wasn't forced, there wasn't any other language available at that time :)

lucky you - i was forced (and even that time no one understood why we had to learn this) - steem on - you are doing great stuff here

I was thinking about Apple and the complicated relationship between marketing and engineering too!

In this case marketing has been pretty much non-existent .. so, no issue! ;)

Now it's time for @ned to get on that🤑

I appreciate your perspective and voice of reason.

I also coded in COBOL on punched cards. What's more, I remember dropping two trays with 1700 cards on the floor when I slipped, on the way into the UT Austin computation center. Before that, I wrote my first bit of code on paper tape. Good times!

Again, that's neither here nor there, but it does allow for the insight that these cycles come and go... and "tech" and "marketing/management" almost always work in a state of constant tension... whether you're Apple or Steemit. By extension if we all quit and ran for the hills every time one of the key players in our organization leaves, the world would be in a state of complete and utter chaos.

if we all quit and ran for the hills every time one of the key players in our organization leaves, the world would be in a state of complete and utter chaos.

Amen to that :)

We were the slowly boiling frog and I could almost see the end.

I've been saying as much for so long, that I've given up now. Ned will be next; rats deserting the sinking ship

I loved the Z80 when it came out.
A huge step in easy of use from the 8080.
But, Zilog died, and Intel continued.

In computing, it is not really the hardware of the software, but without those two, it is just vapor-ware.

There is a magic in innovation. That thing, that is more than the sum of its parts. But, how one gets there,... I do not know.

With Steemit, there is lots and lots of good, but it isn't a complete package yet. And the part that is missing is not really a technical problem.
I hope that both Steem and Dan find their way to more and better.

This post is fantastic! Thank you for the boost, @dragosroua - it was much needed.

You're welcome. Steem on!

Steem on, buddy!

100% with you brother @dragosroua. great post.

Thank you. :)

Wow!!! That's the most amazing part of your post (for me at least :) )
