New Steem Release - Version 0.19.1rc1: Bandwidth Problem Solved

in #steem7 years ago

About 13 hours ago Steemit dev team released a new version of the Steem blockchain, 0.19.1rc1. It's the first release after HardFork 19 and it comes exactly one month after that one.

There are quite a few improvements but most of them are very technical, except, probably, the one related to the bandwidth problem, which put some users in incapacity last weeks. According to the release notes:

There were two big problems with the bandwidth algorithm. The first was an integer overflow that caused max_virtual_bandwidth to be calculated incorrectly. The second was a programmed behavior that caused bandwidth requirements to increase too rapidly for a small increase in traffic. We have implemented a new algorithm for how to calculate global bandwidth requirements that still protects the blockchain under extreme circumstances, but is less aggressive during small deviations from past behavior. Overall, this should improve the user experience when it comes to bandwidth rate limiting.

From a quick look over the witnesses logs, looks like the adoption was almost instant, 21 witnesses (out of about 80 active) are already running the new version.

My node was upgraded with no problems to the new version, which is currently replaying the blockchain. Hopefully, it will finish in less than half an hour, when I'm scheduled for my next block.

Thanks for the update. It's good to know that Steem can fix its problems quite fast.

just gave you an upvote here and an signed you in with a vote as a witness..thanks for keeping us updated :) @dragosroua

Thanks, appreciate it :)

Great news. The bandwidth problem was solved pretty fast.

That's good. I hope you get your next block with no problem and validate it with the new version :)

Thanks, let's hope so. Currently at 57% reindexing and 21 minutes to my schedule. Tight.

So did you make it?

Missed a block but now I'm ok, just verified it.

thanks for the update... you're becoming my go-to source for steemit-related info!

Great news that the bandwidth issue is fixed! Thanks for the update!

Excellent, glad to read, thanks for keeping us in the loop

I'm glad and I hope that this update gets rid of the bandwidth error completely.
Increasing the blocksize drastically increased the probably but hopefully this one will put it to bed.
Let's see what will happen :)

you still have spoken in technical words.. why not say it in soft words about the BANDWIDTH, what is it and how it is useful for users.
It is in fact a key update which included in HF 0.20 which is due and developers must have started testing it with a patch to HF19..

"bandwidth" is a key concept in the Steem blockchain and I think all users should be aware of it, as well as about the witnesses, reward pool and so on. It's a basic education thing and a huge service you can do to yourself to save tons of frustration later on.

But in layman terms, bandwidth is a metric that prevents a user to overtake the whole activity on the blockchain. It's exactly like the internet bandwidth. Based (roughly) on how much Steem Power you have, you get to use the blockchain for a certain amount of activities.

If you don't know about this mechanism, then, at some point, you may start wondering why you can't post anymore. Well, because you're over your bandwidth.

The bug they solved was about a case when if users accounts and their activity grew too fast. That's what this bit is about:

The second was a programmed behavior that caused bandwidth requirements to increase too rapidly for a small increase in traffic.

Hope this helps and kindly invite you to read the white paper when you have time or at least the links at the bottom of my posts, they are intended for newbies.

i will surely do..i am reading every part of steemit, when ever i get the time.. i am more of a self learner..but you know i do get doubts some times.. so, when i come across the posts like your's, I will gain some knowledge too. And I dont hesitate to ask if i have any doubts so that not only I can gain the knowledge but can pass it on to some one too..
I am lucky enough that i am following you because of which i found this post and through our conversations many would know clearly about bandwidth.

thanks to you once again

thanks. great news
