Account Creation Should Not Cost Steem, It Should Cost Bandwidth Allocation

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

Why burn money when we have another limited resource which can be spent on the creation of new accounts? Witnesses could determine the bandwidth cost to create an account just like they currently set the Steem price. If the bandwidth cost is high enough, it solves the problem of avoiding spammers creating and squatting unlimited account names without forcing Steemit Inc to burn down their Steem. Bandwidth Allocation is limited per time but unlimited in the long run, making it long term sustainable. Whales other than Steemit Inc also have boatloads of bandwidth available to them and can start creating accounts for waiting users, decentralizing the sign up process.

Every damn whale would be clamouring to offer people the service of account creation if this was allowed! They'd still be limited in supply, and the witnesses can prevent too many accounts being created as a result of this.

You can already sponsor new accounts. It costs as little as 0.2STEEM and a delegation of about 30SP. The delegation can be withdrawn at any time, but the account will not gave enough bandwidth to act on tbe blockchain.
I've helped out a couple of people by sponsoring their accounts.
Technically, the consuming bandwidth idea could work - but then where does the SP come from for the new account?

Hard fork 20 is introducing a minimum bandwidth for accounts, along with account creation by burning Steem. I am just suggesting that we could also create accounts by burning bandwidth rights (which regenerates automatically, and whales have in abundance, so they don't lose anything in the long run).

I practically never go down much in bandwidth, even now when I have delegated most of my SP away.

interesting comment man. yeah maybe bandwidth can be used for that

In theory, this sounds like an obvious solution. Have you proposed it to the powers that be?

Tried to but they have limited available attention.

Goldfish not Whales then?

@demotruk,
"Account Creation Should Not Cost Steem, It Should Cost Bandwidth" got the idea behind it! Have mixed feelings but yeah it can be possible!

Thanks for sharing such useful article here!

Cheers~

Maybe we can have it so the amount of bandwidth you have is determined by the amount of steem power but I think it would be a good idea to have a way to allocate more bandwidth in exchange for money.
Those who are here for the long term will be willing to spend some SBD rather than spammers who want to get the money out as fast as possible @demotruk

You can already rent bandwidth for money using the Steem Power Delegation system.

Now that's a brilliant idea as it is something which can prevent spam very much

Yes it is very true that you say @demotruk
If you can not avoid it, then many new accounts are created and can be utilized steam that has been burned by way of powerdown.
thanks for sharing.

Hi @demotruk
Where I can rent SP as much as 25k SP. I will replace it with 500 steam for a month.

Hi @fahmidamti,

I personally simply don't have that much SP available. You could try www.minnowbooster.net.

Thank you very much my friend 😄😊

Thank you for this helpful information @demotruk

Great information sir.
