Steemit Advanced User FAQ: A Definitive Guide on Getting Your Unique Content Appreciated

in #steem8 years ago (edited)

Just like @dragosroua, I got tired of seeing FAQ's for beginners, by beginners, who are too lazy to read the already available FAQ on the menu or have nothing to post about, to get that all desired Steem (now that the price is up) and are copy-pasting anything in sight.

So here are a few important points to consider, if you want to bring value to Steemit, keep the price of Steem up (by upvoting and posting original and unique content) and if you want to get rid of all these wannabe millionaire copy-pasters, who are here only for the quick buck.

  1. Everyone is here for the money. Remember last year, when the Steemit hype was over, Steem hit rock bottom and a considerable number of users abandoned this whole venture? Almost a third of my followers are now inactive (you can use this tool to check out your followers). And now that Steem is up, we're bursting with activity, right?

So if everyone's here for the money, only reward these new users, who post THEIR OWN original content and ONLY if you like it - don't go on mindless upvote sprees, just because a user usually gets high payouts - you will win a couple of cents as a curator, but will ruin Steemit for everyone! That's how all those latte and origami posts took over in the first place...

  2. Talking about original content, it is ILLEGAL and UNETHICAL to copy and paste content, created by others, regardless of whether you link to the original article. Why? Because it wasn't you who created this content, therefore it shouldn't be you collecting profits from it. ALWAYS flag posts by people posting content on Steemit, which is obviously not their own. If they want to post a link to someone else's article, that is fine, but posting the actual content (or considerable parts of it) turns Steemit into a spammy site, not much different than worthless automatic news aggregators, of which there are tons. Do we want Steem to be worthless? Not really, right?

  3. I know I just said it, but I will say it again. FLAG non-original content. It's easy to spot a user, who registered a month ago, steals photos from the BBC and claims it's his Top Ten Photos of the Week. Just flag his post, give him a reason to rethink what he is doing or even leave Steemit, and let the actual content creators be visible among all that crud, that's currently pouring over the "New" category.

Did I miss something? Share it in the comments and let's make Steemit a unique place, where original content is rewarded. Oh right, rule number four:

  4. F#*$ing open the post before voting on it and don't just vote on it, because it has $100 dolars in the first 10 seconds, after it's published. Yep, that's rule Number 1 again. Don't blindly upvote posts with high payout! Just, don't!

I'd be grateful if you upvote and resteem this article (but only if you've read it so far and agree!) - let's spread this message!

I can totally see your reflection on the right ant's butt. 👌
Oh yea, and nice post.
Hehe, just kidding. I get SO ticked off when I find posts that copy a little bit of text from an article and then link to the article itself. I've never been brave enough to flag anyone, but I might start reporting to @steemcleaners.
Is that passive aggressive of me?

Heh :) I guess everyone has a different understanding of plagiarism - sadly not everyone has proper education, which is why Steemit is overwhelmed by copy pasted content. Reporting is important, indeed!

Thanks for commenting!

I reported one person yesterday in steemitabuse and someone remarked that the posts in question fall under fair use. There isn't a single bit of original content, however. He copies the first few paragraphs (or sometimes the whole article), uses their photos, and then links to their article in the bottom of the post. That can't be right!

Also, what about the people who post youtube compilations? If those are linked to youtube, is that fair use?

"....all those latte and origami posts...." haha, nice

It's the truth! :)

All those moments will be drown in time… excuse, me… All those photos will be drawn to the DPS, like kitties to the Steem kitty food 😊

And that @dek sound like a short of Deckard! 😊 Upvoted, resteemed & DPS.

Ha! Thank you for a nice comment, @photo-trail and thank you for resteeming!

I'm new so I don't know much about flagging. But I'm wondering if they can flag you back just to damage you (I only post original work and don't want to be hurt just for cleaning up steemit)

If you are that scared, take a look at their Steem Power - if it's not much higher than yours, they can't really do much to damage to your publications. Also, if everyone downvotes non-original content, no one is safe from abusing other people's content :)

True, but wouldn't older curating channels be more effective and more protected to doing this.

Old means nothing - what matters is how much Steem power (and hence how much up / down voting power) they have. The more Steem Power you have, the higher your weight around Steemit.

Upvoted and resteemed after reading. :)

What do you think about news?
In my opinion, linking an article and providing your own comment on it would be ok, after all your contribution to that post would be your comment on it.
I would likely vote for a post like that, but just a "Hey look!" with a bunch of links...nah.

Haha :) Thank you!

Exactly - posting a link to a news article and posting a couple of citations you want to comment on is perfectly fine. But if anyone wants to read the entire news story you are commenting on, they should open the original page, look at their ugly banners, so the journalist can get paid.

Until steemit kills banner ad revenue! :)

Well... let's hope so, although printing non stop Steem actually did spread rumors, last year, of banners on Steemit.

I do remember something about that. Good thing it hasn't come to pass, it would defeat the purpose of Steem.
I don't think many would vote for posts with ads in them; creating a selective pressure against users that tried it.

I actually thought it would be a mandatory thing - ads everywhere.

The horror!
Fastest path to failure!

upvoted this post before reading it and then decided to read it. I wasn't disappointed. Nice post.

See? We now have a reflex to upvote anything that says "Weekly Steemit Statistics" and "FAQ on Something About Steemit". Oh, right, "Cryptosomething ICO Win Big Ending Soon" too :)

wow awesome post :) really enjoyed reading it ;) and definitely some good thoughts you have there ;) I wish you a wonderful day! :)

Much appreciated! I see you have some cool posts of your own, following you!

Thank you very much :) That is very kind from you ;)

Damn your so right!!! I'm one of those people that would just copy and paste stuff sometimes .. My bad. I've seen a lot of other people doing and getting a lot of money. Yes we are all in it for the money. I will make my own stuff now. Thanks for this post!!!!

Hah, we're all posting here, at least partly, for the money. I won't deny that I'm happy that I not only get likes for my photos (much more than Facebook, btw), but also a bit of cash, to buy some more photo gear for my hobby :)
