Price of Steem coin will plummet because of open source

in #steem8 years ago

Steem just open their source code.
A lot of social media sites (coins) will step up in the scene.

In the near future, you will see, the price of Steem drop in value.

The code for making new coins as you say was already open-source and has been so from the start. What was just made open-source is the code for the steemit.com website, anyone cloning that code and making their own version would still be using the same token as steemit.com: STEEM.

So no, this will not make the price plummet, on the contrary it's a good thing for STEEM and should accelerate third party developments.

So if someone wants to use steem steem power and sbd in another application this will allow them to? But I assume the second program couldn't create steem. This raises the question who creates steem. I thought it was the website but it sounds like it's the miners?

Yes, it will allow them to do so.

The website is just an interface that allows you to interact with the STEEM blockchain. The blockchain itself creates STEEM to reward content creators, curators, witnesses and miners. You do not need the website to do vote or post etc, you can do that in a terminal using the STEEM software itself, but the website is of course much more convenient and easy to use.

Any number of different websites could be made that would all use the same blockchain.

But so if a copy website applies votes to the blockchain it will also generate steem. I guess I always wondering which rules could be changed on the new platform. What if they for instance didn't have the 30 minute wait rule for curation rewards.

This is what is so exciting to me. To paraphrase Ned in an interview I watched, this Social Networking site is just scratching the surface. Awesome.

What's being open-sourced today is just the web user interface to the blockchain. The license for the actual blockchain code states:

  • The currency symbols, 'STEEM' and 'SBD' are not changed and no new currency symbols are added.
  • The STEEMIT_INIT_PUBLIC_KEY_STR is not changed from STM8GC13uCZbP44HzMLV6zPZGwVQ8Nt4Kji8PapsPiNq1BK153XTX, and the software is not modified in any way that would bypass the need for the coresponding private to start a new blockchain.
  • The software is not used with any forks of the Steem blockchain that are not recognized by Steemit, Inc in writing.

also steem doubles every year, so its value declines naturally, such that this prediction is impossible to test..

lol yea, he should have said steem market cap :)
I for my part think that diversity will always be a big benefit. And even if steem itself disapears, just think about what an steemid based basic income plattform could do!

Yes but the market ecosystem grows simultaneously. It's an attempt at an equilibrium and it is damned promising.

I don't think so, but it doesn't matter whether the price plummets anyway. The utility and the platform is here to stay.

Thats the laziest argument I've ever seen.

You're wrong because network effects.

There. I matched your energy in this debate.

Is open source meant to expand demand for steem? I don't see why you would use the website if you couldn't award steem power to users. would the new website need to buy all the steem it awarded? That would lift values.
