Why I want ads on Steemit.

yikes

Wait! Hear me out.

This currency isn't going to survive purely on speculation and startup capital.

You've gotta put cookies back in the jar.

We should allow advertisement on this network, for a competitive rate, using STEEM.

This would provide a flow of external capital into both the internal and external STEEM marketplace, driving up the price of STEEM and increasing profits for everyone.

Rather than wait for the inevitable, maybe we should embrace this concept, and become a community that supports its own growth.

Just a thought.

Whatever the problem is, ads is not the answer.

Cant really agree with you on the ads but you do have a point when you say "This currency isn't going to survive purely on speculation and startup capital". This sounds like a debate in the making.

You get an upvote from me, not because I like the idea of ads, but because you bring up the first question I had when I joined: Who's paying for all of this?

The answer I arrived at is that the people who are buying STEEM at Bittrex and other exchanges are paying for this. They are taking a long position in STEEM, i.e. they believe that STEEM will grow in value over time, and would like to make a profit.

We could probably get rid of most of the leeches if, in addition to requiring either a Reddit or Facebook account to sign up, there was also a requirement that your Facebook account is over a year old and has seen some use, or that you've actually got some karma on Reddit.

I'm also fairly selective about which posts I upvote. They either have to be well-written and have a reasonable length to them, or they must bring up an important issue. All of Steemit won't be doing this, so yeah, we'll need anti-leech mechanisms. (Welcome to politics.)

The value proposition for steem has not even started revealing itself. There is absolutely no need for ad revenue. I am not interested in ads destroying this platform.....however if people can make a choice and are rewarded by marketers for viewing or hosting their material, then that could be an interesting solution.

Great that you mentioned about where the money is coming from. In my opinion, rather than speculation, i feel that more can come from quality and unique content. For example, Instead of advertisements, companies can come in and collaborate with the writers with right and niche expertise to talk about their business. Writers with expertise say in environmental sustainability and farming can then talk about say company's businesses and products. The writers' posts can then become a mixture of sponsored posts (with some money going to steemit) and non-sponsored posts.

Unfortunately, looking at the posts, seems that the following phenomena is more dominant:-

  1. More people want to earn $$$
  2. More people earn $$$ by writing posts about steem and steemit
  3. More people feel incentived talking about steem and steemit in most of their posts.

Getting steemians to talk about steem and steemit in their posts has advantages. I feel that it is to influence investors into thinking how great this website is. And to make investors to think there is a lot of potential in steemit and steem. I have been blogging about bitcoin in china at coinbitgold.com. From my experience and my trend data, main media reports and social media has somewhat helped to spur interests in bitcoin buying. The more they report and spread, the more people know, the more the people will be interested to know more about it. = Speculation to buy steem effectively investing in steemit.

I feel that this is not sustainable for a simple reason.

There are more readers than writers in the world.
If readers cannot read what they want to read, they won't go to the website because of the lack of their desired content, or even worse become a website just known for talking about itself and their currency. I rather go mashable, techcrunch, and read what i want to read.

If steemit content does not diversify further and fast enough, sorry i say aloud, steemit and steem WON'T be mainstream.

With steemit we become our own bank, do banks need to pay advertisements to make money, or do they just control and manipulate the money supply as they see fit?

That should answer whether we need ads, money doesn't need value pumped back into it for it to succeed it merely needs widespread accepted backing belief from people.

Here's the kicker, yes we can all create money, but we can't create our own money (without mining), someone must upvote our shit to create money for ourselves. That's the genius part, that's what banks didn't do (and why would they want to put their finances in the hands of some other institution, a competeing institution at that) they control their own money supply, I control everyone's money supply but my own. That's how steemit is different and why it's a far more beneficial currency then what current banks are offering today.
