Vessel: A Steem Desktop Wallet

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

There are a couple of ways to manage your STEEM and SBD such as the Steemit website or using the Cli_Wallet. Steemit wallet features are limited at the moment and the Cli_Wallet can be complicated for a new user and a bit of a fuss to compile. SteemConnect is capable of doing a lot but personally, I prefer to handle things locally.

@jesta has developed a Steem desktop wallet called Vessel. It is a great tool and if you would like to try it out, visit:
https://github.com/aaroncox/vessel/releases
It's available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

After you downloaded and installed the correct version, Launch Vessel and you'll see the "Getting Started" screen. @jesta has done a great job explaining things and made it simple to use. There are 3 options:

  • Import a Steemit.com account

  • Import a private key

  • Experimental - Generate new private keys(for advanced users)

You can see below, I selected "Import Steemit.com account" and will bring you to this screen. This is basically the same as selecting "Import a private key." The only difference is you will specify which key to import to have the proper permission for the wallet vs using your Steemit.com password and select which private key to import. Generally, if you're going to do any type of transferring funds, you would need your active or owner key to have the proper permissions for the wallet.

When importing your information to Vessel, by default the option to encrypt your information is on and you will create a wallet password to be used when doing transactions with Vessel for increased security.

As mentioned earlier, when using "Import Steemit.com account," you can select which key to import to give the proper permission to Vessel in the drop down selection.

The next screen shown is to confirm the account and the permission associated with the keys you are importing.

After you have confirmed, you will be brought to a general overview screen of your wallet. On the left, you will see the different options.

Starting from the bottom, in the setting option, you can enter your memo codes you get from exchanges to transfer your STEEM/SBD to. Currently only supports the main exchanges: Bittrex, OpenLedger, and Poloniex(not recommended to use at the moment)

Selecting the accounts option is where you can add another account. This screen will show you 3 different tabs, each one with different functions.

  • Account Keys -Will show the different accounts and key permissions. You can delete the keys from here as well.(Make sure you have a backup of your keys.)

  • Witness Proxy - Here you can decide to designate your witness voting and allow another account to vote for witnesses for you.

  • SP delegation - You can delegate your STEEM POWER to another account from this tab. You can revoke the delegated SP but will take 7 days before returning to the original account.

The next option on the left from the bottom up is Vesting. - Here is where you can decide to power down you account and withdraw your STEEM over a 13 week period. You will receive 1/13th of the amount you choose to withdraw over the 13 week period and can cancel the power down at any time.

You can choose to power down to a different account as well.

Of course, we come to the send option where from here, you can transfer your STEEM/SBD to another account or select option to transfer funds to an exchange. When selecting the option to send to an exchange, this will automatically set the memo code that was set in the settings menu. This makes things a lot easier and has almost no chance to make a mistake when sending to the exchange.

Overall it's one I would recommend new users to try using to have a safe and secure experience with Steem.

If you don't already know, @jesta is a witness and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND giving him a witness vote. He has created so many tools for the Steem platform and continues to create more. If you are not familiar with witnesses, you can check out this post from @teamsteem who also is a witness that I can recommend voting for.

You can vote for @jesta and @teamsteem here:
