Sultan Mosque Salahudin Abdul Aziz is a state mosque in Selangor, Malaysia. This mosque is the largest mosque in the state and also the second largest mosque in Southeast Asia after Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia.

History

The mosque was conceived by its founder, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, when he announced Shah Alam became the capital of Selangor state on February 14, 1974. Construction began in 1982 and completed March 11, 1988. The mosque is also known as the blue mosque because the dome is blue and one of the largest domed mosques in the world. The structure of the mosque combines Malay and Islamic architecture.

Architecture and Features

The architecture of this mosque combines elements of Malay and Islam. Dubbed the "blue mosque" because its large aluminum dome is blue and covered by layers containing Qur'anic verses.

The main dome is the largest mosque dome in Malaysia, has a diameter of 170 feet and 350 feet from the ground. Four minarets are the second highest minaret in the world after minarets from Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco which is the world's tallest minaret.
