Ultra-sonic Machining (USM)
So people today's post is about USM.
A widely used machine in the industries.
USM
The term ultrasonic is used to describe a vibratory wase of some frequency above the upper limit of the human ear
There are namely two types of wave namely shear wave and longitudinal wave.
Longitudinal waves are mostly used in the ultrasonic applications, since they are easily generated.
Working
A high frequency electric is supplied by the ultrasonic oscillator to the transducer.
The transducer converters the electrical energy into mechanical energy.
To get the amplitude from 0.01mm to 0. 1mm, vibrations of 20Khz to 30Khz are generated.
These vibrations are then transferred to the cutting tool through the transducer cone.
Due to such vibrations, tool vibrates in a longitudinal direction.
The shape of the cutting tool is mirror image of what is produced on the workpiece.
It is also called as Ultrasonic Grinding or Impact Grinding.
Applications
It is mainly used for drawing wires and extrusion dies.
Machining of hard as well as brittle material can be done.
Also used by dentists to drill small holes.
