Student Coin (STC) – Uniting the World Universities through Blockchain
If you have been in the crypto industry for up to 4 years, you’d agree with me that 2017 was such a wonderful year in the crypto space. With ICO booms and all manner of startup projects built on the blockchain, the year was the peak of euphoria and enthusiasm in the industry. On the other hand, 2018 represents the exact opposite as prices of all cryptocurrencies declined by more than 50%. Most high profiled crypto project died, most ICOs launched and promoted in 2017 were nothing but outright scams.
Such things are to be expected as an emerging technology matures and enters the mainstream conversation. Despite the hiccups and obstacles, a huge number of applications and use cases are being built on the blockchain. Some use cases can be seen in:
Banking: where funds can be transferred from one person/location to another in a matter of seconds.
Healthcare system: where it can be used to safely store patient data.
Law enforcement: where blockchain technology can be used to create a common database of the criminals and the crimes committed by them, using their biometric details.
Voting: where it can be used to conduct election in a more transparent way and to prevent election fraud because data stored on blockchain is immutable in nature.
Internet of things (IoT): in which case blockchain ensures data transfer over or between devices is secured and encrypted without third party interference.
The use case scenarios for blockchain applications are many but time will not permit me to mention all here. However, one important industry appears situated for disruption and change driven by blockchain technology. In addition to courses, certificates, and programs offered by institutions of higher learning, blockchain technology has the potential to change how universities and colleges interact with current and future students. This is exactly where the Student Coin (STC) project comes in.
Before we look into the Student Coin project in details, let’s consider some key aspects where blockchain technology can have impact on institutions of higher learning.
No technology is a cure all for problems relating to any industry; however, there are many ways that blockchain technology can help transform the educational landscape. As an example, the current system of recording and communicating the different degrees and credentials obtained in these institutions can be unwieldy. If a sector- specific platform can be built on the blockchain for storing and transferring this information, it can remove a major pain point for students, academics, and institutions at large. Colored token system or some other tokenization model may be used to indicate certain types of degrees or credentials and this will facilitates storing and transmitting this assets.
Similarly, the current system of sharing innovative ideas has become more problematic in terms of tracking ownership. A blockchain application can be built specifically for this purpose and it will facilitate the sharing of information between schools and professors and provide a track record of ownership of the information. Such a blockchain platform can also act as a globally accessible platform for sharing of courses, institutional resources and faculty expertise between universities. This will provide a way for universities to collaborate, pull resources and provide an international experience for the students.
I believe, with time, the Student Coin project being the First True Universities’ Blockchain (according to information found on their whitepaper), should be able to address some of these issues.
So, what is it about the Student Coin project?
The Student Coin project is creating a multi-universities blockchain network. It aims to tokenize modern educational systems and create a multi-university blockchain network that connects universities around the world.
The project is designed in a way that every university integrated can have its token based on the central currency, STC.
This project is first of its kind in blockchain technology, being that it is the first academically focused blockchain, aimed to revolutionize our current educational system. They aim to educate university students about blockchain technology, cryptocurrency markets - allowing them to trade, invest, send or receive Student Coins, as well as gives classes about personal finance and new technologies. To achieve this, they create a valuable token, STC, to unite the students.
According to information on their whitepaper, the project is run by students, faculties and entrepreneurs from 16 universities, including Harvard University, University of Oxford, Imperial College of London, London School of Economics, etc.
With the Students Coin project, participating universities will be able to create their own token on the blockchain, store data and can interact in a non-monetary tokenized way.
If well structured, I believe this blockchain will address some of the challenges outlined above, and serve as a platform for innovation throughout the higher education landscape.
