Madonna of the Trail

in #statue6 years ago

I'm a sucker for a statue. I'm always roped in to finding the reason behind such grand structures. Often the discovery of a statue leads to some interesting revelation or knowledge I didn't previously have. So of course, we stopped to look at this one we spotted on our travels today.

We spotted this statue on our drive today in Springersville, Arizona. Upon closer observation I realized this statue was of a matronly woman with one child held at her bosom and another clutching her leg. The statue was one of 12, all identical, celebrating the courageous spirit of pioneer women who settled the country. The statues were sculpted by German-American August Leimbach and spread across the National Old Trail Road from Maryland to California.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, who commissioned the statues describe the subject as "the face of the mother, strong in character, beauty and gentleness".

Springersville was a cute little town, too, by the way. If you ever find yourself in southeastern Arizona, I recommend stopping by here .
