Comics from a Galaxy Far, Far Away 06: Poe Dameron

Well, would you look at that? It seems I haven’t gone back on my promise to continue this series of articles revolving around the Star Wars comic books published by Marvel these days, otherwise known as the official canon of the science fiction label. And, in this installment I’m going to talk about a series that I kicked myself in the head for not being able to read sooner, Star Wars: Poe Dameron.
Now, given that the Poe Dameron property has become one of the most important characters in the Star Wars universe ever since first appearing in The Force Awakens, the comic had some pretty big shoes to fill in making sure that the character doesn’t fall by the wayside. To be fair, though, Poe Dameron’s popularity isn’t all that easy to shove off. After all, the property is this generation’s Han Solo (yeah, I said it. Suck it up, nerd). That is, if you crank up Han Solo’s insubordination up to 11, leading to hundreds of resistance fighters dead in the cold vacuum of space. You know, typical Star Wars fare!


In any case, the Poe Dameron comic is an absolute delight to read, so much so that I binged the first three volumes of the series this week. And the reason I say this is that for all the entertainment I’ve gotten from reading the main Marvel Star Wars series or Darth Vader series, this one doesn’t have its moments where it shoves new products right down your throats the way Marvel did with that forgettable bounty hunter that was Han Solo’s “wife” and, of course, freaking Aphra and her corny bizarre world R2-D2 and C-3PO droids. Ugh.
And before you say that there’s Agent Terex in this one, know that that character isn’t heavily hawked by Marvel… yet.
Rather, Poe Dameron is able to expand on the story of the current film trilogy by providing some rather amusing details about the state of galactic affairs. For one, we find out where the Resistance and the First Order, respectively, get all that units from to fund their crusades. But, perhaps one of the most glaring details that I cannot wait for the comic book or even the movies to delve deeper into is Poe Dameron’s lineage.


Now, let me give you a moment to avert your eyes because what I’m about to say will definitely contain spoilers.
The movies simply say that Poe Dameron is “the best pilot in the galaxy,” but there is definitely more to him than that. The thing is, as revealed in the comics, Poe Dameron comes from a family that has close ties to Senator, Princess, and General Leia. Here’s what we know so far: Poe Dameron indeed graduated from the New Republic navy prior to the events of the movies; he’s being prepped by Leia to lead the resistance; and that’s about it. Whatever happens next, I do hope this isn’t some info. that the franchise doesn’t brush aside.
