Royal guards are the elite troops of the Empire. To become one you would have to meet the height, intelligence, strength, loyalty and combative skill necessary. If you were a regular old stormtrooper, your chances of becoming one were extremely low.

Royal Guards originated from the Red Guards that Emperor Palpatine created back when he was Chancellor Palpatine. These red guards were taken for the best of the Senate Commandos similar to how royal guards were taken from the very best of their stormtrooper corps.

Royal guards were extremely loyal to the Emperor and they sometimes would be forced to kill each other in combat to see which one was better. That means that all of the guards that were alive where the best in combat.

Royal guards also were trained to be skilled in assassination techniques as well so they could carry out jobs for Emperor Palpatine. They wore battle armor over their crimson red cloak and would often take of their ceremonial cloak for better mobility. Under their robes they also carried a vibro-blade and a heavy blaster pistol in case they were in a situation when their force pike wasn't extremely useful.

These guards could also be deployed in battle if they needed to be, however they were best when they went 1 on 1 with an attacker to Palpatine than in the middle of a full scale battle because of their melee capabilities.
